This can be an EXTREMELY difficult reality to find yourself in. How do we accept that we are powerless over others’ addiction when it’s someone close to us? Someone we love? Our own children? This is the heartbreaking truth that comes along with loving an addict or a person struggling with a substance use disorder. We need to remember to practice love and empathy, knowing their road is not easy or preferable, but we also need to take care of ourselves and protect ourselves from harm.
