78. This Week in Asian American Politics: Affirmative Action, Republicans Block Gender Affirming Care, Philly Chinatown Arena, LAPD Roster Exposed by Journalist, and Julie Su Nomination Roadblock
Description
This week in Asian American politics!
- We discuss the history of Asian Americans and Affirmative Action, which dates back to the 1950s, before conservatives stole the narrative and molded it into one about victimhood. Apparently, Harvard admitted more Asian Americans for the class of ‘27 than ever before—related fact: they still have Affirmative Action so…
- Republicans score gold in legal loopholes to deprive transgender people of care and to go the distance on blocking abortions. For people who claim to care about human life, they sure know how to make sure everyone else’s is hell.
- Developers in Philly continue to push forward with the Sixers arena plan, despite all the overwhelming evidence that it would gentrify Chinatown into extinction and that there is nearly zero community support for it.
- Los Angeles files a lawsuit against a journalist and community watchdog group to censor a public database of LAPD officer headshots the city willingly and freely gave to said journalist. Sorry, LA, no takesie backsies!
- Joe Biden has nominated Julie Su as the Labor Department Secretary. She would be the first Asian American to hold the position, but as always, Joe Manchin has other ideas.
