Publisher's Summary:
When Downeast local Annette Fiorno is found at the bottom of a ravine, outsider and relapsed drug addict Jimmy Sedgwick is accused of murder. Unassuming Maine lawyer Rob Hanston and big shot attorney Shawn Marks form an unlikely legal team as they attempt to discredit the overwhelming evidence. Addiction on Trial, the first in a series of Shawn Marks Thrillers, revolves around the murder cases of attorney Marks, an egotistical yet likable high-powered Boston attorney who can juggle an array of female companions without taking his eye off the legal challenges of his work.
Addiction on Trial sends a powerful message of societal discrimination toward drug addicts and explores common misperceptions about what drug addiction really is - a chronic illness requiring a treatment approach similar to other chronic diseases. Medical and behavioral aspects of addiction are woven into the intrigue of this thriller, which culminates in a riveting murder trial.

Dr. Kassels hits a first serve ace...
Addiction on Trial was a great read and I breezed right through the book. The story line, the characters, their interactions and the author's descriptions throughout kept me engaged. I came away with a better understanding of what doctors and nurses go through in emergency room settings, and the helpless feeling many families have when dealing with addiction issues. The timing of the release comes when coverage of heroin overdoses has taken off. Over prescribed, expensive pain killers morphing into heroin have become a challenge to treatment and rehabilitation. This book gives an accurate account of the perils of addiction and how it affects many lives. By bringing awareness to addiction, Dr. Kassels is shedding light on the problem without being preachy or judgmental. His book is a great vehicle for opening discussions about a topic that is obviously wreaking havoc on all walks of life.

The author does a fantastic job at showing how society discriminates against drug addicts ...
This book is a medical murder mystery/legal thriller and is very educational when it comes to the topic of addiction, which is what I found most intriguing about it as I've had addiction touch my family. The author does a fantastic job at showing how society discriminates against drug addicts and how drug addiction is a highly misunderstood disease.
Addiction on Trial tells the story of three friends, Jimmy, Travis, and Annette, who all happen to be addicts, although Travis and Annette have been able to hide their addictions well through the years. When Jimmy is accused of murdering Annette, his father Adam, along with a team of lawyers, Robert Hanston and Shawn Marks, and news reporter Sally Jenkin, try to prove otherwise.
At first, the story skips around a bit, going from past to present and although the entire story centers around trying to prove Jimmy's innocence, I feel like the author could have made Jimmy a bigger part of the story because I feel there is a lot more to this character. While I didn't like the ending, I found out this is the first book in a series so hopefully in the sequel justice will be served and we'll find out a little bit more about Jimmy.

Addiction--a condition that needs treatment, follow-up and research.
I gave this book 5 stars because of the education surrounding addiction.
