But after a recent brush with death, Cole realizes what really matters to him and shifts his priorities. He is furious with the woman he loves for abandoning him, and he is willing to give up everything - his company, his friends, his fame - just to give her a taste of her own medicine.
But his revenge has unexpected consequences...
A life-threatening journey into the Nevada desert holds many discoveries for Sophie, including an emotional reunion.
At 27, she is given the opportunity to meet her biological family for the first time. But an innocent woman has been killed by the same monster who shot her brother, and she feels compelled to help bring her justice. For the first time, Sophie is feeling torn between her separate lives, but when an old enemy gets dangerously close to finding her, no identity or location might be safe any longer...

Nail-biting Good
I was real eager to devour this book after having read the last one. It was a smooth read, taking only about eight hours before I was out of book again and wondering when the next one was going to come out. While recaps of the "other side" of the last book could have made it start out slow, that route was not taken by the author who starts us off with a healthy dose of poison and bullets to the face in just first few chapters.
If you're into mysteries and have been trying guess "whodunnit" since the last book, you're going to be in for a big (but completely believable) surprise. I guessed wrong, and I'm not even mad.
::Spoilers Below::
There is a little bit of a "recap" phase in the beginning, covering the time period that the last book took place over. You find out that Cole had been both shot and poisoned before faking his own death, as well as several other factors that encouraged him to take that path. The calm period of relaxation he experiences out on his own feels tense, because you know everything that Sophie is going through during that exact same period, and it's good to see that he feels appropriately guilty once he finds out he's responsible for that.
Their time alone makes up a good portion of the story, and combined with the same style of flashbacks as the first book manages to make two (well, three?) people hiding out in the desert a very compelling read. Somehow, an almost Arthurian Quest is dumped on them in the middle of it all, and it manages not to seem out of place. There's a (frustrating) dose of sexual tension in this book that never quite resolves itself, because there's so many other plot points that keep dousing the heroes like a cold shower.
Their idyllic sabbatical from reality is broken when Sophie's boss shows up with information that galvanizes them to return; there are murderers and would-be-assassins that need to be brought to justice. The time between them coming back to LA and the time they actually confront the bad guys seems fast; not like it's lazy, but like some bigger bad guy might have been sacrificing pawns.
