April 1st, 1985: A glimpse of what could have been:

Sports Illustrated published a 13 – Page profile on a mysterious pitcher the New York Mets signed, Sidd Finch (written by hall of fame writer George Plimpton). Plimpton reports; Mets have found the future: Sidd Finch’s fastball clocked at 168 mph. O’shit, can he control it? Who is he?


Mr. Sidd Finch, 23 years old: background unknown, possibly a graduate of Yale University. Speculation: working on a government project that recently ended, clearance to play baseball.


Plimpton’s well-written, 13 -page story revealed everything about Sidd Finch: good, bad, ugly; - and a deep sadness inside the young man that would change the course of his life and baseballs forever.
