Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark's statement that the College Football Playoff (CFP) committee "got the rankings right" immediately after BYU was snubbed at No. 12 caused significant confusion and anger among the Cougars' faithful. However, Yormark's calculated response was a deliberate move to prioritize the long-term stability and political standing of the Big 12 over aggressively lobbying for one team.

Backing the CFP Process

Yormark acknowledged he was "not necessarily pleased" that BYU—which suffered its second loss to Texas Tech in the Big 12 Championship game—was excluded. Despite this, he publicly chose to support the process, asserting that the selection will never be "perfect," and his job is to work with the Management Committee to improve the system, not attack the immediate results. By accepting the outcome, he positioned the Big 12 as a cooperative and mature partner in the CFP's new structure.

Targeting Notre Dame Instead

A major factor was Yormark's pointed criticism of Notre Dame Athletic Director Pete Bevacqua's "egregious" reaction to the Fighting Irish's exclusion. Yormark used his platform to rebuke Bevacqua for "going after" the ACC, arguing that the CFP committee chair had been transparent that head-to-head results would be a factor as teams grew closer. He implied that both Notre Dame and BYU should have understood and accepted the committee's final logic that two losses (especially BYU's two lopsided losses to CFP-bound Texas Tech) were enough to leave them out.

In essence, Yormark traded a fierce defense of BYU for a strategic win: presenting the Big 12 as the measured, stable conference in contrast to the ACC and independent Notre Dame's public outrage.
