Breckenridge Vipers to host home-opener on Friday
Description
The Breckenridge Vipers — a semi-professional hockey team that plays in the Mountain Hockey League — will return to Stephen C. West Ice Arena on Friday, Nov. 15.
After opening up the season with two wins on the road against the Sin City Kings, the Vipers will host the Park City Silver Kings for a series of games. The Vipers will meet the Silver Kings for the first time on Friday, Nov. 15, and again on Saturday, Nov. 16. Both games are slated to begin at 7:30 p.m.
“I thought the Vegas trip was pretty successful,” Breckenridge Vipers general manager and goalie JR Engelbert said. “Obviously, we came out with two wins, but more importantly we got some new guys on the team this year some ice time. … We are definitely looking forward to ramping up the season and getting into the meat of our schedule.”
Beyond the excitement that comes with a new hockey season, the Vipers will be celebrating its 10th year as a Senior-A hockey team in Summit County.
“As a Senior-A team, making it 10 years, is an incredible achievement,” Engelbert said. “There are not that many teams out there that can say that they have made it 10 years. I think a big part of that is the dedication of the players, but more importantly, the dedication of the community and our fans.”
The Vipers will be celebrating its 10th anniversary throughout the season with different giveaways and promotions. The first will take place on Friday night with the first 100 fans receiving a free t-shirt.
Engelbert and founding Vipers skater Rick Batenburg, are not only looking forward to celebrating with Vipers’ fan throughout the season, but are also hoping to make a run for the Mountain Hockey League’s Clear Cup.
“That is obviously our goal every year is to win the championship of the Mountain Hockey League,” Engelbert said. “It is a relatively young league, but the teams that are apart of it are enthusiastic and there are a handful of teams that have been established for a few years that we have been playing. This is probably the deepest team, talent and hockey wise, of players we have had in a few years. … I think we are in for a really nice year and hopefully a bunch of big wins in front of our fans.”
In addition to hosting 17 home games throughout the season, the Vipers will take on their foes from the Interstate 70 corridor — the Vail Yeti — two times. The Vipers will face the Yeti at Stephen C. West Ice Arena on Feb. 28 and at Dobson Ice Arena in Vail on March 1.
