You probably get lots of emails about how your instruction or podcast or products were used in real life to save a life from a traumatic injury. This isn’t quite like that. But sort of. 







Recently my 10 year old decided to sharpen his pocket knife. He did a really good job (apparently) but he lost awareness of the blade when a bug landed on his calf and he swatted at it. As you might guess, his freshly sharpened blade went right through his skin, opening up a hash about 4 inches long and maybe a quarter inch deep. He came inside and asked for help dealing with his now-bloody leg. 







I don’t do blood. But recognizing that blood happens I’ve listened to most of the podcast episodes and bought a few kits. And the first thing that came to my head when seeing my kid was “is this more blood than you’ve ever seen?” from one of the early episodes. The answer was very clearly “no,” which then told me the bleeding wasn’t life threatening, and that knowledge made everything easier.  With pressure and gauze, we controlled the bleeding quickly; then we bandaged him up and drove him to express care where he got 11 stitches. But the main thing he needed was to know everything was going to be fine; and because of the information in the podcast about recognizing life threatening (and non life threatening) bleeding, I was able to honestly reassure him it would be.
