You may know him as NASA's second chief flight director and the lead flight director during Apollo missions 11 and 13.

He played major roles through the foundational programs of human space flight like Mercury and Gemini.

You may recognize his signature flat top haircut and white vest.

He's not just one in a million or one in a generation.

He's one in all of history.

Gene joined NASA in 1960, becoming one of the most significant figures in the space race and ultimately leading America to the first lunar landing.

Today, we're talking with him about his experiences in the agency, his leadership and legacy, and lessons that must be carried into NASA's future exploration goals.

You know, this is really a challenge.

Many years we spent there addressing the press.

And this was a real learning curve for all the young flight directors we had.

And in fact, the controllers, because we'd bring them along to the sessions.

But this gave us a feel for the other side of the business.

And we developed a very strong firm relationship with our media at that time.

That's fantastic.

We're going to reminisce a lot today.

But I want to talk about the right now, too.

So what have you been up to lately?

How are you doing?
00:02:20
Well, basically, I just finished cleaning up from the hurricane that we had down in Dickinson.
00:02:27
It took a lot of trees down.
00:02:28
We lost power on the internet.
00:02:30
And it's real experience to learn to live without all these things.
00:02:33
You become accustomed to all your life internet, telephone, TV.
00:02:39
But basically, what I'm doing now is I'm in the process of transferring my work history to various facilities.

I've sent all of my flying gear up Toshkosh, Wisconsin.
00:02:51
They're restoring an aircraft for me up there.
00:02:53

00:02:53
Louis University came in.
00:02:55
And they're getting all my documentation, a lot of memorabilia.
00:02:59
I have the junior high in Dickinson.
00:03:02
They're the beautiful display area they've set up for me.
00:03:06
And my home base was a little central Catholic.

And that is where the mooner-- one of the lunar rockless, when I was declared a ambassador of exploration.

So basically, I want to get the materials I have out to the young people and provide the inspiration to the next generation, what space is all about?

Yeah, everybody that will value it.
00:03:28
And you've really not-- I mean, you retired from NASA.
00:03:31
But you haven't really retired in life.
00:03:33
You are still so busy.
00:03:34
You talk to the interns here.
00:03:36
You've written some books.
00:03:38
What's that been like passing that on to the future generation and just sharing all of your stories and your lessons?

To me, it's a very simple process.
00:03:48
We have six kids and five girls, one boy.
00:03:52
And basically, five of the six worked in the space program here.
00:03:56
And basically, they basically provided the inspiration for me to continue relationship with the young people, because they are the seed corn for the future.

They are the individuals that are going to pick up and carry the work that we did forward.
00:04:13
Not only in space, but basically in medicine and technology, all of the things that came about as a result of this space.
00:04:21
So basically, I'm in the process of transferring my work history to the various places where young people will see this and hopefully be inspired.

And take the risks to become an engineer, a scientist, work in the media.
00:04:36
Basically, address the people of the nation about the business of space.
00:04:42
Amazing.

And the books that you've written.
00:04:44
What's that like going through that process and deciding what makes the cut and what doesn't?
00:04:48
Well, the first book I had, a contract.
00:04:53
And basically, I had a word count.
00:04:54
I had an editor that was in top of my case all the time.
00:04:58
And if they didn't like what is putting in there, they'd edit the stuff out.
00:05:03
The second book is entirely different.

It's self-published.
00:05:06
And basically, it was a lot more enjoyable read.
00:05:10
I had to do a lot of research about my people.
00:05:13
I found that in mission control, when we moved into the Houston area, our recruiting zone was the Great Plains.

And I had a large number of people that came in from very schools there.
00:05:27
There was one Southwest Oklahoma State College that had three students come in from.
00:05:33
I did not know that they were Native American Indians that basically were transferred from the Boat Rosebud Cherokee tribe up in the Dakotas.

And they were working for me now.
00:05:45
I had flight directors who became members.
00:05:48
It had been through the same school.
00:05:50
They were farm boys, ranchers.
00:05:53
So it was interesting.
00:05:54
I learned a lot more about the people.
00:05:56
But in particular, I learned more about the people I flew with.
00:06:00
So the new book that I wrote has the research.
00:06:04
It's certainly talking to gene crayons across a cup of coffee.
00:06:09
And it was a lot of fun to write.
00:06:11
I particularly selected individuals to review the people that understood risk.
00:06:18
They understood aviation.
00:06:20
They understood space.
00:06:22
And I had the people who had landed an aircraft in the Hudson River.
00:06:28
Oh, yes.
00:06:28
A Australian pilot who had probably the world's greatest aviation disaster on his hand.
00:06:35
He had about 500 people in an Airbus.
00:06:37
And he managed to save that crew and the people.
00:06:41
So it was interesting writing and learning about people as you're right.
00:06:45
I introduced women for the first time.
00:06:47
So I had to do some research into the women in the organization.
00:06:51
So it was a fun project to me.
00:06:54

So it's a lot of learning, not just telling.

That's very cool.

So let's rewind a little bit.

You've always had a love for space, it seems.
00:07:04
But a lot of people now, when they go to school, they'll go to school with this goal in mind of coming to work for NASA.
00:07:12
Was that-- that wasn't really an option when you were in school.
00:07:16
So what was your goal in the 1950s?
00:07:19
I came through somewhat of a strange path.
00:07:23
Basically, my high school thesis was in the design and possibilities of an interplanetary rocket.
00:07:29
I was taking people to the moon when I was a junior in high school.
00:07:35
But basically, my love basically was aviation and flying.
00:07:39
I grew up in a military boarding house, whether we had the soldiers, sailors, and airmen that fought the battles in World War II.
00:07:48
And I admired them.
00:07:49
My father died.
00:07:51
And basically, my mother basically ran that boarding house.
00:07:55
And this inspired me to chase and pursue aviation.
00:07:59
I went to a small aviation school of parks or college at that time.
00:08:05
And they trained about 10% of the military pilots in World War II, one of whom was became a French Escobresky.
00:08:16
And he became my group commander when I was at Myrtle Beach flying the first of the Supersonics.
00:08:21
So basically, it was a evolutionary process.
00:08:25
Where first, I had the dream of space.
00:08:29
But I also had the dream to fly.
00:08:31
So I carried that dream forward.
00:08:32
I flew the first three mass-produced fighter aircraft, the F80 shooting star, two of the saber versions and the super saber, the first of the Supersonics.

I flew in Korea, flew in Taiwan.
00:08:46
So I had the opportunity to build a team of young pilots.
00:08:50
Or basically my flight that I had during this process.
00:08:55
So it was a process of continuing to grow.
00:08:58
When I came out, I basically wanted to remain in aviation.
00:09:03
But they sent me to a tanker squadron, so I decided I'd move into flight test engineering.
00:09:09
And I became a flight test engineer for one of the very first B-52 aircraft developing the technology that would allow the aircraft to penetrate the Soviet airspace.

This is great because I had a shop team.
00:09:23
I had instructors in both of these areas that were basically my ideals.
00:09:29
Harry Carrow, one of those initially in flight tests, taught me all about flight test data reduction.
00:09:34
He was a World War II bomber pilot, who flew 37 missions.
00:09:38
And in fact, some of the missions were so risky that when he brought his crew back alive, they got credit for two missions.
00:09:45

Ralph Sailor was a Marine.
00:09:48
Basically he taught me the process of learning to work.
00:09:53
In fact, he used the term, work with dirty hands.
00:09:57
And I thought, well, what does he mean?
00:09:58
He says, well, get involved in what your people are doing if they're mechanics dirty hands of the way to go.

And I carried when I came into the space program, because the space program was just beginning.
00:10:12
And I got an opportunity.
00:10:13
I saw an advertisement, Navigation Week Magazine at that time that said, looking for qualified engineers to determine the feasibility of putting an American in space and other.

Go for it!

That is where I'm going next.

I can't imagine seeing that in the paper.

And it changed your entire course of your life.
00:10:34
But it was obviously a calling.
00:10:36
Like, you were born for this.
00:10:39
It was a calling.
00:10:39
I found it was a calling, because when I arrived, I was a member of the first space task group.
00:10:45
We were operating in Langley Field, Virginia.
00:10:49
And basically, the entire workforce were people who did aircraft flight testing.
00:10:55
They developed the aircraft in World War II.
00:10:58
They developed the first of the jet aircraft.
00:11:01
They developed the first of the aircraft that were powered by rockets.
00:11:06
So it was interesting to live and work in there, because we had a common love.
00:11:11
This was-- risk is the price of progress.
00:11:14
And if you're going to go faster and further, it's going to involve risk.
00:11:18
And you just got to learn to live with it.
00:11:20
And it was, to me, an opportunity to grow.
00:11:26
But the thing that was amazing was that I was only one of three people who had worked in operations.
00:11:33
Every people worked in design and development.
00:11:36
But I basically was involved in actually flying the aircraft, testing the aircraft.
00:11:42
And when it came time to project Mercury, we did not have that kind of people.
00:11:47
We'd moved down to the Mercury Control Center.
00:11:49
And we borrow would borrow engineers to sit in mission control.
00:11:53
They'd be in the mission control room.
00:11:55
We'd start trying to train them.
00:11:57
And they had never worked with each other before.
00:11:59
They had to learn the relationship you had.
00:12:03
And after the conclusion of the Mercury program, basically I was given the task to build the team for space.
00:12:10
Well, looking back to then, too, I mean, a lot of people see everything that you did, building that team and establishing where we are today at NASA.
00:12:20
They see you as a trailblazer and as a leader.
00:12:23
But when you're just starting out, and there's been no one before you in this realm, who were your leaders or your role models?
00:12:31
I had many role models.
00:12:33
The people taught me in flight test.
00:12:35
But then I also had Chris Kraft.
00:12:39
He was the early pioneer.
00:12:40
And basically, we were learning the leadership in mission control both at the same time.
00:12:46
I had been in a mission control facility when we were flight testing the B-52.
00:12:51
This was new to Kraft.
00:12:53
So all of a sudden, I became his aide to camp.
00:12:56
So by the time that we got to the third or fourth mission, I was named as his assistant flight director.

Gee, this is pretty cool.
00:13:05
I've been just new job in there.
00:13:07
And I'm the assistant to the boss man.
00:13:09
But it was an incredible learning curve.
00:13:14
And we had so many people we could learn from.
00:13:17
Walt Williams was the tough guy who basically developed many of the fighter aircraft and tested them during World War II.
00:13:26
But he also basically was the project manager for the X1 rocket ship that Chuck Yeager flew.
00:13:34
So we had this kind of a relationship and the thing that was strange, not strange, but really very beneficial is from the point that we met in mission control and worked together.

We carried all the way through the rest of our life.
00:13:53
So basically, we had a team.
00:13:54
By the time we got to the Mercury program, finished the Mercury program, we knew each other.
00:13:59
We were friends.
00:14:01
We knew the business.
00:14:03
So basically, now we could figure out what it was all about and how we're going to build people for the future.

And so much of that work then, so much of the work we do now requires trust.
00:14:16
And so I look to people that have been here a little bit longer.
00:14:19
And they've been through missions before.
00:14:21
And they can say, oh, on the last spacewalk, we did this.
00:14:24
But you were coming in for the first time.
00:14:27
You're all figuring this out for the first time.
00:14:29
So how do you build that trust with your team to make the right decisions?
00:14:36
To me, the process of stress came from confronting fear and finding the ability to use fear as an instrument to accomplish an objective.
00:14:51
And it was very interesting.
00:14:53
I had a couple of very difficult times flying aircraft.
00:15:01
But every time that I recovered and found my way out of the box I had gotten into, I found myself stronger.
00:15:12
And I found that fear is basically an energizer.
00:15:16
It basically gets every bone in your body, your mind going, everything else.
00:15:22
How am I going to solve this problem I got?
00:15:25
And basically, all of a sudden fear disappears.
00:15:28
And you're basically oriented towards a solution.
00:15:31
And I think that was the one we-- I first started building the teams, but we're now moving into the Gemini program.

It was to find those leaders who had faced fear before.
00:15:46
I brought in a guy for training, a Mel Brooks.
00:15:52
Who basically had fought as an infantryman in Korea.
00:15:56
I brought in John Luellen, who was a marine who fought.
00:15:59
And they basically withdraw from the Chosen Reservoir in Korea.
00:16:05
John Hodges, we worked with.
00:16:07
He had done flight tests with the Avro Arrow there.
00:16:11
So these were people that basically worked in very difficult environment.
00:16:15
But basically, what we did is we established a series of, I won't say, themes brand.
00:16:25
It was, we had to brand our teams to this new business of space.
00:16:31
And we did it by, well, in the military, you have an insignia.
00:16:36
Well, if you take a look right now, we establish an insignia for the teams in mission control.
00:16:41
Yeah.
00:16:42
That believe it or not has gone on for 50 years with minor modifications.
00:16:46
It's now worn by astronauts.
00:16:48
Right.

OK.

We had the Foundation's mission control, a series of statements, one of which is basically adapt to very young people.

It always be aware that suddenly and unexpectedly, you may find yourself in a role where you're performance.

Your performance has ultimate consequences.

This talks about training people in accountability.
00:17:14
You then have a motto.
00:17:16
Your motto is basically, rest juxtapres, rest juxtapres.
00:17:21
Achievement to excellent.
00:17:22
Excellence is the standard.
00:17:24
So this is the way you brand an organization.
00:17:28
And it's interesting.
00:17:29
This brand still lives today, over 50 years later.
00:17:35
It is in mission control, the foundations of mission control and the walls.
00:17:40
We've added only one word to it.
00:17:42
And this is the result of the Columbia accident.
00:17:45
Vigilance, we added.
00:17:47
So it's interesting to basically establish that kind of a foundation.

It's like concrete marble.

You cannot destroy that thing because it's embedded in the people.

Yeah, I agree.

I mean, it is on every door in mission control.

Before you walk in, you see that insignia.
00:18:09
You see what are the 10 commandments of space flight?

It's when you enter that room, you know that you leave anything you're going through at the door.

You're here to do your job.
00:18:19
And it's really refreshing to walk into a room where you know everyone is focused on the mission.

No, that works.

It was the same way with the later in the program when we had the Apollo one fire.

I created the term tough and competent, because I was absolutely killed by the fact that we had lost a crew in the launch pad.

And that this should never happen again.

So basically, it was to basically establish the mindset, accountability for everything that you're going to do.

That's toughness.
00:18:55
Competence, total and absolute complete preparation.
00:18:59
Where basically you are on top of everything that comes up.

And we'll get into that discussion when we talk about fire is not an option later on.

Yes, I'll save a little bit of that for later.

So let's talk about you as a leader a little bit.

I mean, you are kind of the apex of what a lot of people see as a leader.

So what is something that you think you do well?
00:19:23
You know, that's a challenge trying to think about one thing.
00:19:32
But it's basically established the foundation of trust within the total organization.
00:19:43
Because trust is the key element.
00:19:48
I have to trust you.
00:19:49
You have to trust me.
00:19:50
We have to trust the engineers that we had in the program.
00:19:54
So this basically relationship must exist in an organization.

And it starts at the top.

We were very fortunate in the early days.
00:20:08
We basically had Walt Williams.
00:20:10
And the crew that crawled in the X1 rocket ship trusted him that this rocket ship was going to work.

It wouldn't perform.
00:20:19
Chris Kraft trusted me to act as his deputy.
00:20:23
Walt Williams trusted the astronauts.
00:20:25
They were going to be put into space.
00:20:28
So it's a question of a relationship that basically can never soften.

It is total.
00:20:36
And it basically fills-- I won't say every bone in your body.
00:20:41
No, it isn't.
00:20:41
It's basically-- it's the mind.
00:20:44
And the thing is that once you've established it, you can never back off.
00:20:50
You can never lose it.

If you do something, you have to walk the talk.
00:20:56
When you establish trust in there, you have to walk the talk.
00:20:59
Because if you don't, somebody's going to say, what's going on?

What's with cramps?

He is not the same as I knew him when we were in training.

So it's trust is the key foundation for virtually everything that you do.

I think trust also, not only do you have to have that within your team and that they're going to do their job to the best of their ability, but it also means that you can have more open communication,

too.

If you trust someone, you're more likely to tell them, I'm concerned about this issue.

Or, hey, I need some help here.
00:21:38
If I trust you, I'm more likely to come talk to you when I know I'm having a problem.

So I think that's also really important in the realm of communication, too.

The communications are my first boss, Harry Carroll.
00:21:52
And the flight test taught me that basically communications are the key to success in every venture that you're going to undertake.

And it was interesting that when we were going down to the moon, I had one final set of words with my team before we locked the doors and went to battle short.
00:22:16
I said, I will stand behind every call you will make.
00:22:21
We came into this room as a team, and we will leave as a team.
00:22:26
Then we locked the doors.
00:22:29
And from that moment on, the team was ready.
00:22:32
They knew that whatever happened in that room-- and boy, we had some bad times that day.
00:22:40
Basically, we would solve the problem, and we would emerge victorious by putting a American on the moon.
00:22:48
Wow, I can't-- it's hard to imagine being in that moment.
00:22:54
And so I'm thinking about, right now, in this world of spaceflight that we're in, I'm trying to find the things that I'll be nostalgic about someday in the future.

So I'm trying to soak up all of these new partners that we're working with.
00:23:09
And as we figure things out and do things for the first time, did you know then just how special and how truly valuable all of this would be in your life and to the rest of the world going forward?

No, I never thought about it that way.
00:23:27
To me, it was an instant on time when we had something needed to be accomplished.
00:23:37
And it might be basically recovering from the Apollo one fire.
00:23:44
It might be in Gemina 8.
00:23:46
We had a serious problem on board, the spacecraft.
00:23:51
And we had two ships that had to be with Neil Armstrong and Dave Scott.
00:23:56
That basically, we didn't want to take the chance of getting them around to proper landing sites.

So it's come down on the Pacific Ocean.
00:24:05
It was a time that when we left the auditorium and our building, that we had the mindset within the members of the team,

never again.
00:24:18
We'll never fail in this way again.
00:24:21
So it was really something that is a key to accomplishing an objective that is high risk because risk is the pride of price of progress.

And it's something that demands performance from individuals.
00:24:42
It's something that is unwavering.
00:24:44
They are going to accomplish their mission, no matter what it takes.

So it's really a blast to live in an environment.
00:24:52
Everybody asks, why did you choose this?
00:24:56
And I said, well, I like it because everything is black and white.

There are no shades of gray.
00:25:04
We either go or no go.
00:25:07
And when we're in mission control, and the test conductor comes to you, that says, are you go?
00:25:14
You say we're go for launch.
00:25:16
And this is true when we give the crew the go.
00:25:19
In the aircraft operations, fighter operations in Korea, I had a crew chief.
00:25:25
And every time I taxied out, he'd give me a hand salute, saying, my aircraft was go.
00:25:31
I did the same thing with a B-52 to the crew that's in there.
00:25:36
And every time we launched a crew, we gave that same go.
00:25:40
We were go.
00:25:42
We touched on tough and competent a little bit.
00:25:45
And I want to go back to that.
00:25:47
What does tough and competent mean to you?
00:25:50
Is this a mindset?
00:25:51
Is this a culture?
00:25:53
Is it just the foundation on which we should build all of our space flight?
00:25:57
And maybe it's all three of those things.
00:25:59
But how do you see tough and competent?
00:26:02
It's accepting accountability and the toughness.
00:26:07
Tough means accepting accountability.
00:26:10
Yeah.
00:26:11
And this is accountability for everything I did.
00:26:15
Everything I taught to my people.
00:26:17
This is what I expect from them.
00:26:19
They will be accountable and dealing with me.
00:26:22
It is the very foundation, the peak performance that you have as an individual, entrusting each one and other because you need that toughness.

If people are going to equivocate, they're going to work around.
00:26:40
They won't give me an answer.
00:26:42
They're not being tough.
00:26:43
And this is one of the things that getting off track here.
00:26:47
But I went through three generations of young controllers.
00:26:53
And this is one of the things that we had to build into the teams flying the shuttle program.

So we established a boot camp where we went through the foundations of Mission Crowley, went through the insignia, went through the model, but basically the accountability.

Focusing the accountability because we depend upon you.
00:27:15
I depend upon you.
00:27:17
The program depends upon you.
00:27:19
We will fail without you.
00:27:22
And basically, when you create that, then you go to the next one, Competence.

That's total and absolute preparation for anything that might happen.

So the business is a foundation that moves you to other places.

Do you think that you would ever add anything to tough and competent?

I mean, it has stood the test of time.
00:27:47
No, it's been tested in many ways.

It's interesting, I had a special forces team that adopted that over in Afghanistan.

Yeah, wow.

I looked at the pilots that I flew with.
00:28:07
That was their role.
00:28:10
That was their mantra.
00:28:12
That was their belief.
00:28:14
That was the brand that we had established.
00:28:17

How did Apollo 13 begin?

A change was made to the design of the electrical system to use some power supplies that were down at the Cape to save money.

They changed the wire gauge and the spacecraft many other things.

What they missed was a very small sensor in the cryogenic oxygen tank that did not was not modified to accept this higher voltage.

But that itself wouldn't do it.

We got in a hurry because we were in a hurry for launch.

We had filled that cryogenic tanks with oxygen.

And now when we're getting ready to launch, we boil off the oxygen, but it isn't boiling off.

We run normally warm oxygen through that is super cold oxygen and boil it off, but it wouldn't boil off.

So he turned the heaters on.

When we launch overseas, we look at landing sites like Zarago Suspense that are not in high population areas.

So basically, we control the risk as best we can in the process of mission design.

These are the kinds of failures that basically are preventable.

We can get together with the program manager and say, hey, we ought to change that.

But once we get in during the course of the mission, like during Apollo 11, basically, I had all kinds of options to work around.

My concern on that is maybe we're taking too big a chunk in the first bite.

So I think that the key path is to really go back and look at some of the things that we did in the past that added complexity to the program that we never used.

OK, one of the things is the memory that we have followed the shuttle program.

Shuttle program, the key problems that we had were with thermal control systems.

And the thermal control design was such with the tiles and everything we did in there was for a mission for the DOD.

And it was a mission with a fractional orbit that basically once around, we deployed something and we came back to Earth so we had a very high cross range.

Well, this changed the design of the thermal system, thermal problem.

It addressed electrical power profiles for management of the payload.

We had all these things.

So basically, we carried that sky now through 100 missions because we couldn't afford to go back and rebuild this thing.

I think that I think there's some point where I think program management should really address all of the elements of the very complex Artemis program that we're building.

And are all of these things truly necessary?

Are they timely?

Could we put them off to maybe a later section of the program?

So I think they're foundational because not only does that complexity yet, but it makes for integration problems.

The toughest problem that I had during the Apollo program was putting all the pieces together for the lunar landing.

Now, what are the pieces you got?

You got two spacecrafts involved.

They're going to be operating together.

They're going to be separated.

One's going down to the moon.

It's going to carry all kinds of experiments in there right on the line.

And I think that fortunately, George Low, after the accident, probably the-- he was one of the key players that made Apollo a success.

He had built Hendel.

George Low recognized that the software was going to be the key to accomplishing the Apollo program.

And he was worried about the ability to produce the software in a timely fashion to meet President Kennedy's goal to land in the moon before the decade was out.

So he got a hold of Chris Kraft.

And he said, Chris, you got to do something to basically sit on top of the IBM and the Draper Labs people right on the line.

And he says, you have to integrate all these pieces that got to come together in the flight software.

So Chris got to go with a trajectory guy.

Bill Tindlow, I learned when I wrote my book that he was a board of destroyer in the war in the Pacific in World War II.

And he was one of my best friends.

We would go to his cottage down in the beach at Boliver.

And I'd ride in the sailboat with him.

But basically, Bill was the guy that was given the task to tie all the pieces of the software together because everybody wanted something different.

So basically, he tied this together in what was called the data priorities.

And two days after the meeting was over, Tindlow would write a memo that said, we had a long meeting.

I heard a lot, I got a lot of input from you guys.

So I think the future demands more from a culture aspect than it demands from a technology aspect.

I talked to a new administrator who came in up there, who was put on a line with Dan Golden.

He was brought on board to address the financial problem of the space station program.

He inherited the Columbia accident.

And it was very difficult for him because he had not been in that environment.

And he got a good team of people pulled together.

And I wasn't on the team, but I had communications with people on that team.

And Sally Ride and I tagged up on a couple of occasions.

And fortunately, the solution came about by making some-- what I'd say-- dramatic changes in how the program was run.

They went through four program managers for the space station, which is very interesting.

And the first one was address the problems associated with the internationals, get them all speaking the same language as they.

Then they brought Tommy Holloway on to basically address the integration process.

So it was interesting they went through the steps that now took-- it was a difficult set of different challenges created because of personnel complexity,

interorganization of complexity, international complexity, financial, and try to address these as set pieces.

And they went back through that.

So it's really a question of how do you get the people to really accept the fact that experience is the price of progress?

Every time we ran into a problem with the program, we're fortunate we had a very capable aerospace industry out there.

And we could bring in John Yardley from McDonald Aircraft to basically teach us rookies how to run a program.

Basically, we had people who could bring in and work as NASA.

They would accept a gross pay cut to work as a government employee for some period of time to teach us this business.
