Chile heads to a presidential run-off between Jara and Kast
Update: 2025-11-17
Description
Chile’s presidential election is heading to a December run-off between Jeannette Jara of the Communist Party and José Antonio Kast of the far-right Republican Party. Jara led the first round with about 26.7 percent, followed by Kast with roughly 24.1 percent. Eight candidates contested the vote, but none reached the 50 percent plus one required to win outright. Jara, a former Labour Minister, is campaigning on boosting policing, ending banking secrecy and easing cost-of-living pressures. Kast has vowed to tighten border controls, including building walls and trenches along the route from Bolivia. Public concern over rising crime, including murders, kidnappings and extortion, shaped the first-round campaigns. The 14 December run-off will pit Chile’s left against an emboldened far-right.
