Foreign policy is a lot like managing a big, extended or blended family—like many siblings, step-parents, and step-children—especially when it comes to things like inheritance and survival. I was concerned by something Ronnie Chan said in a recent interview: he believes the world is about to see a wave of creativity coming out of China in art, film, and innovation. At the same time, China is exporting a new kind of cultural revolution to the U.S. through social media, with ideas like wokism, DEI, and Critical Race Theory. The irony is hard to miss—while China is moving away from communism after decades of seeing how it weakens a nation and brings poverty, it’s now encouraging young Americans to flirt with those same ideas (communism) that fail them. That’s a dangerous path; we’re setting ourselves up for failure if we don’t recognize the threat. I remember TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew saying something along the lines of “I am here to protect your freedom.” I want to say, “what freedom?”
