And I've seen the Crosse a lot in the last couple years, especially in some of my favorite shows.

And we are now going to go talk to a guy that we welcome back to the show.

He is the frontman and lead singer of the Black Crosse, a band that in the last few years has turned in some of my favorite live shows in recent memories.

Not only because the shows and the music and the playing is great, but they actually are actual live shows, which is pretty sad that in today's music world.

That's going to be a bar to reach that you went to a live show that was actually live, but joining me now is Chris Robinson of the Black Crosse. How are you, buddy?

I hate to tell you this, but this is just a computer replicant of myself.

This is a sad state of affairs when it's controversial when I say people think people paying money to hear a band live, it should actually be live.

I don't know what level we've reached or that's accepted, but bums me out hugely as you know.

You know what I mean? I think, yeah, I don't know. It would be hard to, I mean, I guess the reality of it is, is like, maybe if we felt that way, but I mean, I guess the money talks, you know, and it's like, oh, who cares if Motley crew doesn't play.

The biggest concert of the year last year or whatever, you know what I mean? It obviously people don't care. They just want to hear them.

They want to see the comic book characters. They want to remember the old times in their lives and they want to, you know, go see a spectacle. You know what I'm saying?

I think that, I mean, by the way, I'm not just picking on Motley crew. There's like lots of bands do it. I mean, to me, even if it's not computer driven, like we're one of the last bands that actually have sound on stage.

But chords going into guitars and that speaker's blowing air out through the thing, you know, and by the way Chris, I'm glad you I'm glad you mentioned that man because that's another thing with me too.

I mean, sometimes people go see bands and you look at the stage and there's like no amps and you're like, where's the amps? And that's not to get overly technical, but that's when these, these guitar players and musicians are playing through these modeling things, which they just recreate the sound.

And again, I'm not a musician, but I hate that man. I like to feel the air moving and see cabinets with sounds coming out of them. I mean, call me old school, but I can pick up on that even as a layman in the crowd.

Of course, of course, but again, you know, I think there's there's always going to be a certain musician and a certain, you know, there.

I don't know technology. Sometimes I think, you know, make things easier like, you know, I produce a lot of records for young bands and some older bands too, but.

You know, a lot of young bands are like, oh, we want to do it the old way we want to buy tape and something I'm like, yeah, man, I'm old enough to have made records the old way and some of the technology in that situation is good, you know what I mean?

Yeah, we take, we take money and put it into this record and not be in there, especially for, you know, when we made shake your money maker with George Chacullius in the summer of 1989.

You know, I said it before I must I say jealous again, we played jealous again, 50 times to get it right, but.

Part of that was the nature of the technology of the time, the other part of that was we that was our first record and we just weren't great musicians.

You know what I mean like and then part of that was George Chacullius our producer trying to find the magic in which take it would be or whatever right.

So I think in some instances it's cool, but I think, I don't know, I feel I'm old school guy, I like, I like, I like the vibe and I don't need it to be perfect, you know, that's the other thing.

Yeah, there's people think it needs to be perfect and I still like this idea of the black clothes is just living breathing sort of organic creature that makes this down and, you know, sometimes it's faster than last night.

So I mean, as a, as the lead singer, I rarely ever sing anything the same way, you know, I mean, so.

Well, I love you for all that different, different drugs, you know what I mean for different.

Yeah, well, I love you for all of that stuff and and the great music, of course now speaking of music, this is the first time I've talked to you on the air since happiness bastards has been out and I saw you at the, you know, we hung out at the stone show in LA not too long ago, we talked a little bit, but.

This album for a first record back since you and Rich got back together, it is, it is an incredible record. It's absolutely a candidate of album for album of the year for me and i'm just amazed that you guys could come back with all that went on so strong with such strong material and such a great sounding record.

And I'm curious with this coming together, Chris, how did it work because while you and Rich were a part what was a lot of this stuff written and then you came together and refined it or was it all newly written once you reunited how what was the process.

I mean, a little bit of everything goes into the cauldron, you know, so during, you know, I think the best thing that we did.

What to do the Shake your money maker tour we didn't come back and have like this nebulous space of what's it going to be what's it going to look like feel like sound like the idea to focus on like the record that you know introduced us to the world and vice versa the record that opened up all this.

This adventure for us many years ago that was kind of the catalyst of okay also we you know we've done so many different things as a band we've gone off into you know I think our original audience that like the rift kind of hard rock sort of part of what we were doing.

We instantly go into a groovier more like you know stone down we start to get more psychedelic and so I think to be focused on like what we really love and where my life and my inspiration and my imagination was taking me and Rich was like okay boom here we are like back to square one with what we love.

And what we love and what we've always done is just by feel you know again we're not we don't have another there's been no other way for us to kind of deal and then so I think you know the pandemic comes along everybody is like wondering the whole our whole lives are up in the air and especially people who's.

Entire lives and commitment and and their business is like music and doing that going out in front of people and going to places and doing it.

So rich had something that he had been working on and I mean we knew instantly that's what rich and I start as teenagers writing songs before we could really be players or performers we we we felt we could write songs and that's how we start.

So he had some things and then he would send me ideas and I would you know what we do rich writes the riffs and I do the lyrics and the melodies and then do some arranging and I'm always you know frustrating rich by saying that's not the course that's the first turn it around you know.

Again because the technology was a lot easier for me to say rich just flipped out around like make do too far to this and that.

So we had some pieces but then by the time we are getting you know we do the tour we do two summers of it and then we get that and then we you know hook up with Jay Joyce and national producer extraordinaire you know we're writing all through the whole thing he hears things he likes.

He tells us things that he doesn't like so it's kind of a constant you know what I mean we don't really have it's not like anything in the black clothes is ever written in stone except for maybe our passion for keeping it like a live situation loud and noisy and what we feel is real rock and roll so it's always kind of morphing into something until it feels right.

When you guys came back together you mentioned obviously it was about live shows and then you did the money maker and all that stuff was the idea was the understanding between you and rich when you reunited that there would always be new music as well because let's be honest there's a lot of bands been around for a long time they just go out and play the catalog and do quite well doing that but you mentioned you guys started as songwriters was the mandate the whole time hey we're going to also do new music.

No I mean I think for us it was about let's let's just see how we get along let's see how the band works let's see what it means to us and again it sounds like a broken record but let's see how it feels and we were really lucky to you know rich rich and I just needed the invitation to love each other again you know what I mean because you built up all this shit and all this resentment and anger about a lot of things that were out of our control.

No things still out you know again we're from the deep South we've been in a rock and roll band since 1985 it's not a it was hardly a place of great emotional vocabularity or like you know again when it's you know I always I remember we I was talking to someone about it rich and I the other day when we're out here in Los Angeles where we both live now.

I mean I've lived in LA forever but we're at the hotel and we get a call from our management that Izzy Strablin wanted to meet us and you know this is like guns and roses you know the guns and roses you know like ripping out the whole planet the biggest rock band in the world this is back in the day early on yeah we you know this is like after appetite and we love guns and roses and we're like wow is he wants to meet us that we go to his house.

And he was super cool I was remember he was listening to aftermath by the Rolling Stones and I was like cool you know I love this record.

And he said we are we talk for a while and he was like you guys aren't prepared for what's going to happen and we were like we have ten dollar a day pretty I'm at the time and we thought.

And he was like go man you guys are going to when it takes off you guys have to just hang on for dear life and we were like cool okay that was nice of him.

We realized like in the next couple years it would really come to you know to be.

A dynamic that we had to navigate but you know after all of that and everything the 90s and then get back together you know when Rich and I are in this place and again I said it before I mean without you know without the real openness and kind of wisdom and love my wife can bring to this you know she was the one who really set my wheels and motion also to look at it in a different.

Angle to see my brother and you know look at him for all the amazing things that I think he is he's an amazing not just as an amazing.

Someone in my family but he's a very unique and gifted musician guitar player and I'm incredibly lucky to have him as my songwriting partner in my partner in this band and you know I was blinded by a lot of other stuff whether it was real imagined whatever those are my things to deal with.

And I think he would say the same about himself so I think once we you know figured out that like this was real you know that these what that our motivations were they were true you know what I mean and that we that we've always felt that music is almost in a weird way a sacred thing you know something that is.

Elevated our lives not just through the success of the band but.

Elevated our lives in being outside our kids you know who bad kids you know I mean we were bad kids we were trouble in school we're bad grades we didn't you know what I mean and that kind of.

No malaise of suburbia in the 80s you know music was our it was our opening into culture our opening into something that we could that we weren't at the.

You know no one can tell you know people said you couldn't do it but it was our destiny it was our world to control so I think once we get back after all these decades to me and him in 2019 saying this is what we want to do of course there's going to be new song.

You know what I mean like that's leave me and rich in a room together and a guitar and an notebook and a.

We're writing that's what we do we've always done since we were in mom and dad's house and today you know so right that's just that's just what that's just what interests us you know and it's just a way that we kind of interact with the world you know.

Should mention the the black crows have a bunch of concert dates starting on Thursday in Simpsonville South Carolina wherever you're listening you can see all the dates throughout the year at the black crows dot com some we'll touch on this in a second just some stuff got turned around here because the aros myth tour went down but I want to talk to you about that in a second but one more thing on the record that and it's interesting you bring up guns and roses because I.

I maintain that the reason why guns and roses since slash and off have been back in the band have yet to write and record a brand new song in over 10 nearly 10 years is because when there's a weird dynamic in a band.

I think it's way more dangerous when you try to get creative and go into studio and start writing that's where things can implode if you're on the road everybody can take separate vehicles you see everybody up on stage separate dressing rooms you know if there's some tensions or past tensions everybody can have their space in the studio not like that so much so that's why I think you are the individual members have done like three records but they can't make one new song as a band.

So for you guys you know given that there was such a divide between you and rich for so long going into do a studio record where you concerned or where people around you concerned to say hey this has been going great so far but this is where it could implode putting these guys into trying to write a record.

Yeah I know you know it's funny in our history and our like you know combativeness and our anger and you know in some cases the you know chemical sort of component and everything you know.

Even when rich and I are together and there's no one around whether we're with the producer or whoever we're working with we never those were the times where there were we didn't argue about that now we would get into the studio sometimes and argue and we would definitely get into our moves on tour and.

You know how to navigate some of that but when when it was just me and him always working together we that was like our piece that's our that's our peaceful time.

And and why really don't feel you know that I think the other thing you hear on happiness vouchers is you know I mean guns and roses you know that's epic that everything they've ever been is epic epic drama epic success epic.

Confusion epic whatever you know I mean and I can't imagine the kind of pressure to stop the go with that and I mean it doesn't I mean I it doesn't affect them is they're great Dan great you know again they're epic they're guns and roses so for rich and I don't know if it's family and just.

You know kind of we come from a indie rock background of you know this kind of any more where we're more anything kind of however whatever we're feeling is what we want to express and I i'm lucky to have a songwriting partner like rich because he plays me something and that dictates the mood of.

Deliric the mood of my where my boat you know how I'm approaching the song as a singer um but all of that is done and so you know we were such fucking weirdos.

You know what I mean it's I don't I would I would have no idea how to put it in an equation or you know what I mean or some sort of.

You know I'm glad we didn't start doing it I'm glad that we got to do the tour and you know and we it was great because we got to you know we jostled some members and I think you know where we are today especially after the happiness bastards first part of the year in Europe and everything.

We love this band our little community of the players in this band from everyone to our crew guys to you know the kids in Lesley are back up sick everyone everyone is.

You know bringing and cully on drums Eric our keyboard player our toys is like yeah I don't think we've had anyone like that sitting at the keyboard to the great late at harsh and.

Nico joining the band you know what I mean and that's been you know it's it's like the it's the it's the time I wish we could have had back in 1995 but it wasn't meant to be.

Right hey I one other quick thing to the hit me I got to ask you about this your take on this so you you know we've talked about you and your brother and how it's going well and now there's this great record and all these live shows and all of that.

The other brotherly feud band that just reunited as a band that you actually did the brotherly love tour with and that is the Gallagher brothers and Oasis who have come back and this gargantuan record setting business at least in the UK.

What's your take on those guys coming back together and do you have any dialogue with them still since touring with them.

Yeah I mean I'm friends with both of them I'm closer friends with no I mean we were just in London a couple of months ago and I had tea with no very like to.

Elder statesmen and rock and roll dude together we used to be out you know on the getting pissed and now we're having tea in the afternoon at the hotel.

But you know I'm just super happy for them and you know great band again epic band culturally they mean so much to people in England and you know it's funny without sounding too.

Like happy but I you know I know that the person is happiest the most is you would think it's their account or their divorce attorneys or whatever but it's a it's their mom you know what I mean and it's funny because rich and I.

You know rich and I feeling our relationship you know my mom my dad passed away a little over a decade ago but our mom still alive she's a Nashville she's a 86 this year and I know it just made her life better to know that rich and I are where we are you know so in Noel and Liam's place I'm sure just as family it's nice you know I mean they have kids you know their kids need to know each other you know what she.

You know it's just normal stuff and very excited for them and very happy for them and I you know rich and I take full credit for them reuniting I mean there's hopefully you get a piece.

Hopefully you get a money because you know Noel came to our first show back in London and I you know they they had made comments.

I mean that tour is over it's almost 25 years ago we toured with them here but they thought that rich and I were like crazy but in our like violent episode so I would think maybe somewhere in the reality that it was like well of those two assholes can do it maybe we can do it.

Well I'm sure whenever there's a reunion whether it's you guys are oasis or now Lincoln Park or whatever it is and people from afar see it and there's some great divide.

They probably sit there and think and let's be honest they see the business happening and they probably say you know what maybe there's a way we can figure this out we should not only for the fans not only for the bank account but you bring up a great point and I think as fans we kind of forget this is that there's a human side of this.

We just see you guys as these these rock heroes or these great musicians or songwriters up there but you're right.

I mean most of you guys have kids and families and there's got to be a connection on that level and that healing has got to feel really good internally and on the part that the fans don't see.

I mean it yes of course I mean like you said that's the reality of one of the layers of what's going on and like you know the little buckle of a that is our fucking life but I mean yes and you know it's funny I we did a interview a couple of you with the great David Frick and he asked us something about commerce and I said I mean let's be honest we're capitalist and rich said well and rich said we're capitalist but we're bad.

capitalist but we're bad capitalist that was like the funny together but and then of course we're being asked about oasis and I'm like I'll give you 300 million reasons why it's a good idea for those things.

Exactly exactly right. Hey what about let's talk about what happened with you guys you know you hung in there with Aerosmith you were going to do the run when it was rescheduled it felt like it was going to happen.

I know Tyler got up with you at a show in England and sang Mama Kenny seemed to look and sound pretty good and then we find out the whole thing is happening.

What tell me about that and and how much did that throw you in a tailspin when you found out it wasn't going down because when we were at the stones together we were talking about it and I said you you think it's going to happen like yeah I just saw Tyler and we're good and it's and then it goes away so that was a whole crazy thing.

I mean first and foremost you know yes I mean for us it's you know we were just you know we love Aerosmith they they've always been very kind to the black crow's and one of our favorite rock bands and the tour worked out to where you know it was it was really it was really cool to be included in this and it worked for us on a number of levels.

So when it got canceled last year we were like okay that kind of threw us more for a loop because we were it already started and so this year.

We were just I mean I'm disappointed more as a fan than anything because we're cool you know what I mean we have our own world we have our own life the black we have our own people and we're we're taking care of you know what I mean and we're we have a lot of.

We have a lot ahead of us even after 30 years you know where we were we bum most definitely but but I'm also like I said I'm bum because I you know I love that man it was great to see them but I also get it man you know what I'm saying like people are you know.

People say we'll make Jagger doesn't I'm like well that there's only you know there's only one Steven Tyler there's only make that's Mick Jagger dude you know what I mean like of course Mick Jagger still does it he's like a freak of freaks.

He's Mick Jagger you know what I mean so I also understand that if a Steven feels like he just can't do it it's heartbreaking for him but I also understand that all the pressure is on the singer you know what I mean.

And you listen to him you know he's not singing to back up tapes when he comes out and does back in the satellite you know you're like Jesus man that last show in a long island which was the third show of the tour last year.

We all had a sweet to go watch the shows we're in New York we have lots of friends and families so we're all we did our show we had a great show.

We all go up to the sweet to watch them and like I'm sitting next to Rich and just like they sounded incredible I was like wow you know what I mean so.

I mean I get it we love we love them we love Steven I hope that that's not the last that they get to do something but I also understand the pressure I also understand when your body is your instrument and.

You know I mean it's just a fact you get to be 76 years old you know what I mean like he's.

He's you know Mick Jagger's a great one of the greatest rock singers and rock stars of all time but locally what Steven does is real acrobatics you know I mean like he does and.

It's very unique in such a gifted singer that I'm sure I know that it broke his heart to make that call you know.

What was it like when he came out with you in England I think you guys he came out and did mom akin with you was that pen or did he just come out what what went on there well I knew he was coming to the show and you know because I mean that was an incredible show you're.

We're standing on stage and like Steven's over there watching us Jimmy page was there like filling us on his iPhone I was like oh we have to really be good tonight.

Besides the fact that we always have had great London shows and the crowd is like they're really amped up and ready for it and so we were like okay we.

And it was cool because when we played the Greek in LA Ronnie Wood came and sat in with me the the face doctor that was like a dream come true and bluer was fine but we we weren't expecting Steven to play and there wasn't any plan but we we said oh if he's coming well let's play mom akin and we'll dedicate it to him because he's there and then by the time Rich gets to when the drum kicks it on the intro he's like coming out there you know I mean do it and I was.

You mentioned a guy a second ago that I know there's a big anniversary coming up with and that is Jimmy page you mentioned was at that show as well and of course you guys did you know the black rose Jimmy page and that that record and that touring and all of that.

I am told and you can tell me what you can tell me that there is going to be an anniversary reissue of his is it the show from the Greek that came out.

Yeah it's the show from the Greek and then we're doing you know Jimmy page black crow's box set for I think if sometime next spring.

Six vinyl box set incredible remix remastered and all sorts of stuff from a few other like pieces but there's you know there's stuff from the sound checks there's stuff of there's like a jam that knowing it

that since been 24 years or 25 years of rich and Jimmy and everyone just jamming on stage playing super you know what I mean really special stuff and Jimmy's really excited about it and actually I just texted with him about the master versions and just putting the final touches on all the art and everything.

And no I mean it's we're very excited about it and it's always been a real sort of something like we still pinch ourselves sometimes like oh yeah we were in a band with Jimmy page for a while.

But the one thing Chris the big thing about this if I got this right is that when the live at the Greek show came out it was all zeppelin and then but he of course you did black crow songs that he also played on so this is going to for the first time include him playing the black crow songs to right.

Yeah most definitely in it for whatever genius reason that the record company had back then it was obviously some bad blood between us and them that they didn't want to put the black crow's material on it I mean we did play a lot of blues numbers you know I think we did like some money waters we did some little Walter we did some champion jack deep free so you know that's how we kind of meet Jimmy and bond with him is over blues.

So some of those tracks were on there but yeah this is the first time that you know it's like wow Jimmy plays bebinder on she talks angels and he like rips on no speak no slave and all these black crow things that we you know had rich and I would be like okay this would be good for him to play you know what I mean we wanted to play things that we felt would benefit like both parties you know.

And it is amazing for every it's a great music doc but if you're a Zeppelin freak and a Jimmy Freak and a Robert Freak and a bottom freak I mean it is at iMac theaters itself it's really cool.

Yeah I've heard great things about it I have not seen it yet because it came out it did like a film festival couple years ago and then it went underground I think they did some re editing or something on it but Jason bottom told me about it and he was really happy with it as well I was a little bum though that it ends after like the second record I was wishing it would go through the whole catalog.

When you see it you won't feel that way because it's like it's like the inception of Led Zeppelin it's like that those guys coming together and their influences and where they come from and it's about the first two records and it really I think you know it's before like you know all the drama before all the things that you know that maybe are more romantic and people love drama and they love the.

Jimmy buying Alistair Crowley plays in the you know the fish incident and all that kind of groupies and all the stuff that happens this is purely about how these guys just start like come together as like this live wire of energy an amazing music ship and it's you would you when you walk out of there you would never think about it like that you know what I mean like and again it's like Zeppelin it's so epic that you have to take it at episode at a time.

Since back in 1990 yeah oh yeah we would we I mean yeah I mean when we did shake your money maker tour or that was the first time we ever played that record in its entirety I mean by the time that record came out and we were like even the first tour opening junkyard we were playing new songs I covered this we were always kind of you know we might have had bell bottoms in long hair but we've always had like this kind of punk.

Going against the grain you know and I think part of it is what endured us to people part of it is what maybe kept us from you know certain levels of commercial success or making it easy easier for ourselves just within the music industry but.

Can you take us and the fans through what happened because you had correct me from wrong but you had the heart attack where you were you on stage with UFO when it happened.

Oh no we've done that we've done that a tour a tour in Europe with some bloody eight wave which was awful and I've got back here everything fine.

She's laughing at the TV so it's a comedy I'm going no this is really hurting and I feel like someone's got a fist round your chest and you know we you think well this is a little bit more than acid indigestion.

So but it kind of eased off and I will pop it on the bus the next day down to the hospital which is fortunately just down the road.

And they said oh we're keeping you in you've had a mild tremor up there and that was it that rang out I said oh look I know I popped out for a few business and wine but I'm in hospital at the moment.

And that was about it and the next thing was I was really what will worry is whether they're going to crack your chest or give you some stents and fortunately I got a couple of stents which I'm eternally grateful for so it gives you a slightly different swerve on life.

I think I got lucky the two balls in UFO didn't and well Pete found a flyer stairs but I feel quite fortunate I got lucky you know.

Yeah as you mentioned Paul Raymond and Paul Chapman we both we lost both of them I believed to heart attacks and was Pete was a fall Pete fell is that what ended up you know taking his life.

Yeah he took a dive down a long flight of stairs and that's what I don't know why I'm laughing it's just like just so.

Very Pete ridiculous where you go so I'm with Pete I we went down a flight stairs so that was a that was terrible you know so you know two pulls went to heart attacks and Pete took a dive down the stairs yeah.

Now no I I'm only laughing as well because we both knew of course I knew Pete as well and anybody that knows Pete knows that he was a comedy of air so it in some ways it is almost fitting to hear as horrible as it is as it is that he's gone it is kind of you know fitting for him and his history because he had fallen many times even on stage hadn't he.

Oh yeah he was a master faller but he normally got out I always thought we had the constitution of a horse nine that was the last thing I would have ever expected to have happened to him but you know it's well you never know what's lurking around the corner so.

Do you feel we're going to talk about the new record here in a second but do you recall your last we know that Pete wasn't in UFO for several years tour while the band was was active.

Do you remember anything recent before he passed that you had an exchange with them.

Oh I think Vinnie had the one well he was a festival and I think Pete said to him oh Vin by the way if you want to get back quickly said you can borrow my plane.

And he goes hey what plane bad American accent there by the way he goes hey what plane he went oh yeah my private plane I've got a plane and now Pete actually believed this so there's no doubt he thought we had a private plane.

And he was saying to me oh you can borrow my plane and then he said you don't got a plane she just I have it so so even right of that and Pete would spin you a line of some something he dreamt up in that you know that while brain of this and it come up with his stuff I it was a endless you know like saying he had a 9 queue of.

200 and something or other and and Tony Blair was his best friend it went on I think you want to meet he wasn't it could be the life of full you know the fantasy world of but you know he did it well he was a good

salesman of a blessing for that but that was the last one I remember was Vinnie said hey Pete hasn't got a private jet or you know we go no he hasn't and he's very I know I need to get one too.

This is story I heard so there was I forget it was you are some artists told me a story about Pete going on tour and he told his wife or his girlfriend at the time that he was just going down the corner for a bottle of milk and the bus picked him up and he disappeared.

I do his paper because we had to catch the ferry this is way back when we had the old van catch the ferry and I think Pete was a bit feared to say all look we're going on tour right his wife wanted to have gone on a regular 95 job and Pete wanted to do that and talk

between the two and he said to he said oh just can't prop out get something and for the only I think he's rang a laser it's all just by chance or something to feel on the legs.

Tell me about the origins of this when did you have the idea to do this record and assemble these musicians of the one guy from UFO the last he was in UFO several times including the last version is

Neil Carter outside of that the musicians you work with do not have an affiliation with UFO so tell me how mags motel came together in the timeline on this.

Well food is six actually I have them on the radio going back donkey years ago when UFO was going out on the road and we was wanted a lively band to come along with us and I had a DJ on the radio saying hey I saw this band food is six the other night they were great.

And so I listened to them and then I said oh can we get voodoo with us on tour and that was ages ago and that's when I met Tony and Joe from the motel and we kind of bumped into one another one of the over the years but I happened to bump into him at the American MC for a visa.

To come over to your place and because we got chatting and I'd already said I was stepping down from UFO prior to that and I said I do what I do what I'm going to do I said but I know I've got to write something got to do something I've got all this I've written stuff you know as you do you write notes and you carry stuff around.

I said oh I'd like to do blah blah blah and he said well I've got some stuff I'll send it over to you this was just at the embassy he was off on tour I was going somewhere and I said oh great and then when I spoke to Neil I would just reiterate the same thing I said I want to just you know casually do some stuff.

And he said oh I've got I've got some stuff everybody's got stuff and then we got that lockdown thing so Tony had sent me over a load of bits and pieces of material and Neil had and I had like hours and bags of time in between cultivating the garden taking the dog for a walk I'd go in the garage and muck around with these tunes.

You know plenty of time no money involved nobody asking you when is it ready and so it was kind of it's like that good fun stuff you used to do when you first got a band together and Tony it was dead easy to work with lives not far from me.

Just in Chesson actually were Andy Parker was born ironically enough in the same streets which I couldn't believe and Joe listen the same area so it's a bit like you know these bands you get when you get it together with your mates from around the corner it was a bit bit like that and I'd all that time and we just started pulling stuff together and doing some demos and

the next thing I knew it was whoa let's put it down we sort of developed it from there but it wasn't one of those I wasn't a pre-meditated let's go and do an album thing it was more like a oh this is you know when you have a hobby or you do something that's fun and you don't go fishing or something or

it was one of those things where we added like a good time not going around with tunes and seeing what would work and what wouldn't work and then a ranging and everything.

So yeah a bit like that you know when you go out and have a bit of a laugh or a hey let's go down the pub and then we'll lay down some tunes and they'll be good ever at home.

So that was mainly where it came from I know Tony for ages from that during Joe I'd known and then we'll knew obviously from the ages and tell me was the only guy that I didn't really know until we did the recording.

Tommy Gentry is the guitarist along with Neal Carter and then you mentioned Joe that's Joe Lazarus on drums and Tony Newton on bass who was also currently touring in the US with KK Downing so he is also in that band I saw him recently.

So that is the band for Mox Motel so Phil you said something in that that's interesting to me you said when you you had already decided to put UFO to rest basically and it sounds like this record.

It sounds like this record was born out of the covid lockdown and then you got just came together with new you have these songs and you wanted to play him and you wanted to work with some different people.

So I get all that but why why was UFO in your mind done at that point why did you want to put a button in the band when you did.

I think after it's easier when you look back on it but I think after Pete went and you know he was suffering a few problems.

Was you rather pop through the room rock band so I hear and he was suffering a few you know setback by I think when Pete went it kind of took the real sort of the original flavor out of the band and he was kind of kind of a replaceable in that sense you could you know obviously get another bass player in which we did bass not the.

Same it was like take it a big lump out of the band and as bad as it was at certain times it was kind of the character of of the band and I for some time after Pete when I felt a little bit it meant I'd have to do double the amount of jokes.

Double the amount of drinking because it was gone it meant I'd have to double up I didn't have anyone to hide behind because Pete was to the interviews too because he would come out with such ridiculous things you go this is great he could have come out with some crap no but he was good at it so I think after that I think the steam went out of there and.

We were slowly shunting down and I didn't particularly want to see UFO go in and sort of ever decreasing circles yeah so I think that was a general just that.

Yeah I mean I for fans that don't know UFO did exist for for many years and actually made some real good studio records without Pete in the band while Pete was still alive but Pete was struggling with some stuff and wasn't active in the band you had robbed a Luca.

In their playing base and look as a hardcore fan of the band as you know everybody always missed Pete but the band was still I thought very good live and of course the records were some of those records were real good as well but I do I do agree there are certain core members of bands that it's never going to be the same without but you did exist for a number of years without him but it sounds like for you it just wasn't the same and I kind of understand that too because.

Did Paul Raymond passing away I mean Neil had history with the band and Neil is now in Mox Motel with you on this record and a big part of it of course but went when Paul past both Paul Raymond and Paul Chapman did that even though Paul Chapman did not play in the band in a long time did that have some impact on you wanting to end UFO as well.

Yes and the new album the new album mox motel it sounds great you sound in great voice so did you record it sounds like you had this material for a little bit did you record this record before or after you had the heart attack when did you do your vocals.

I partly wrote literally some bits and pieces but we actually did this after the after the main event.

Yeah the reason I asked that question is because I'm wondering if having the heart attack had any impact on your voice or your stamina your ability to sing judging from listening to the record it doesn't sound like.

It did but you being the guy doing it in the studio did you notice anything different in your voice or your delivery recording vocals post heart attack.

No no I mean I did that. Art attack business was I don't know how to put it remarkably it went off.

You can watch the stents going in and after a week you're pretty active and you wouldn't know.

So anything had gone on the only drawback is I went to one of those peak fit things I said I'll go see after a heart attack and I felt what are doing in this room with these extremely elderly people which are probably about the same age as me but I'm going look all these old people.

And there's a call to play out and John I'm still standing to do exercises to can you imagine that like to complain I said I'm not dancing or working out throughout and John.

So all you know no it didn't really do it wasn't that severe.

And then we could I think we will do a show along those lines and next year do like to do a couple of festivals if possible with a turn up wasn't going to do one of those you know the long overnight things.

That is done there's no interest for you at all to revisit that band with perhaps some of the surviving members to do one final show even I mean I know me as a fan.

Would love if if the surviving members all got up and did one special show even in London or something put a what I would think would be a nice button on the bands history that doesn't have any appeal to you at all.
