In sports, the Wyoming football team is coming off its second bye week of the season. The Cowboys will be on the west coast tomorrow to take on the Bulldogs of Fresno State.
Turnover margin, red-zone opportunities and short-yardage situations were the focus during the off-week.
The interesting side story in this week’s matchup between the Cowboys and the Bulldogs is the Craig Bohl connection. The former Wyoming head football coach was a mentor to Bulldogs head coach when Matt Entz was a defensive coordinator under Bohl at North Dakota State University. Entz succeeded Bohl at NDSU, winning national championships in 2019 and 2021.
It was no surprise that Coach Bohl’s name came up during Entz’s news conference this week. Toughness will be the key to the game tomorrow between two teams that share similar DNA, Coach Entz said.
Entz racked up a 60-11 record at North Dakota State over five seasons. He has acknowledged Coach Bohl as a significant mentor. Here’s what jumps out at Entz from this year’s Wyoming team under Coach Jay Sawvel.
Entz said his Fresno State team will have to match or exceed Wyoming’s physicality tomorrow.
Wyoming head coach Sawvel talked, this week, about how the Cowboys used the bye to heal up physically from the first half of the season and prepare to finish strong in November. At 2-3 in conference standings, 4-5 overall, the Cowboys have a shot at making a move toward the postseason.
One stat jumps out at Coach Sawvel. In Fresno State’s three conference wins, the Bulldogs are plus-9 in turnover margin. In their two losses, they are minus 4. Sawvel said Wyoming has added a few new wrinkles to start the second half of the season, but it all comes down to fundamentals.
Kickoff is set for 8:30 . Bigfoot 99 will be on the air with the pregame show and all inside intel. Wyoming is a 3.5-point underdog.
