Discovering True Joy: Insights from Leighton Campbell's Your Happiness Equation
Description
In a captivating discussion on the LOA Today podcast, host Walt Thiessen and co-host Anne-Marie Young delved into the insights of Leighton Campbell, author of the upcoming book "The Happiness Equation." Their conversation unveiled profound truths about the nature of happiness and the power of personal choice.
Leighton began by sharing the origins of his happiness equation, which stemmed from a casual discussion with his children. "We were just sitting around spitballing, talking about happiness, and I was like, 'Hey, let's see if we can create an equation to measure happiness,' he recalled. This simple exercise sparked a journey that would ultimately lead to Leighton's groundbreaking work.
At the heart of Leighton's equation lies the belief that happiness is not merely an emotion, but a reflection of the structures we build in our lives. "It's not a measure of how you feel today," he explained, "because you may have had the worst day of your life, and you take the score, and if you have great structures in your life that are almost universal, I argue that they are universal in producing happiness in people's lives, you will probably score as good as you do on days when it's, you know, a really great day."
Walt was intrigued by this concept, noting that it aligns with the idea that happiness is not something that happens to us, but rather a choice we make. "That reminds me that the structures are really manifestations of our internal structure," he observed. "I mean, it's I imagine. I mean, I haven't seen the survey on your website, but I imagine that that's really what the structure is measuring, the internal structures, and how our in turn, our inside is connecting."
Anne-Marie echoed this sentiment, highlighting the power of choice in determining our happiness levels. "It just comes down to choice," she said. "And it's a really good question to ask yourself is, what do I want to choose? Do I want to be happy? Do you want to be sad? Do I want to make a difference? Do I not?"
Leighton's insights also touched on the role of purpose and passion in happiness. He shared his personal belief that his purpose is to be a good husband and father, a conviction he's held since his teenage years. "I think everyone's life has a purpose," he said, "just to be clear, but I don't penalize anyone if they don't believe their life as a purpose."
As the conversation progressed, the trio delved into the impact of technology and the constant stream of negative information on our well-being. Leighton emphasized the importance of discernment, noting that "people are learning how to discern in ways that they've never discerned before." Walt added, "We're devaluing something that we gave much too much value to, that's that pendulum coming back swinging in the other direction."
Ultimately, this thought-provoking discussion left a lasting impression, reminding us that the key to lasting happiness lies within our own hands. As Walt eloquently stated, "We're having to learn what our own ripple effect is, and it takes a while, because a lot of the time we can't see it. So what's the best way to do it? Well, you mentioned it gratitude. You have to have gratitude. Well, how about having gratitude for your own ripple effect?"
