From Struggling Student to Passionate Educator: Renes Lophanor’s Inspiring Journey
Description
As an educator, Rene's unwavering dedication to his craft is truly awe-inspiring. In a captivating conversation with host Walt, Rene shared his remarkable journey, revealing how a chance encounter with a German teacher ignited his lifelong love for teaching.
Rene's path was not a straight one - he initially pursued engineering and architecture, until his passion for languages led him down an unexpected route. "Learning German was one of the good things that happened," he reflected, crediting his teacher's innovative approach of ensuring every student contributed orally in class. This emphasis on building confidence resonated deeply with Rene, shaping his own teaching philosophy.
"I teach languages, and the aim of learning a language is to speak it more than to write it," Rene explained. "One of the biggest fears for anyone learning a language is to speak it, because you're scared of pronouncing the words wrong, people are going to laugh at you." His solution? Fostering an environment where mistakes are celebrated, not shunned.
Rene's genuine care for his students shines through in every word. He spoke of a challenging student, Ryan, who was a "real challenge for the whole school" - until Rene's compassionate approach broke through. "Because you're not like them," Ryan told Rene, revealing how the teacher's personal connection and willingness to engage with students on a human level set him apart.
This sentiment lies at the heart of Rene's teaching philosophy. "I don't think we can teach any student if we don't establish first of all, a relationship, a connection with them on a human level," he shared. "So that they see you more as someone who wants good things for them and then they will be more willing to follow your guidance and learn from you."
Rene's dedication extends beyond the classroom walls. Recognizing the gaps in traditional education, he has taken it upon himself to teach his students essential life skills like personal finance - topics he wishes he had learned earlier. "I'm teaching them so that they are very grateful, very grateful and very receptive as well," he said.
As Walt and co-host Jody Lynn reflected, Rene's approach is a stark contrast to the trauma many carry from their own school experiences. "I wouldn't have as much of a job to do, probably not any job to do, really, when it comes to that, because dealing with money, that's primarily what I coach on," Jody Lynn shared. "They're just numbers. And that is primarily what I teach is to separate or to disconnect from that. Oh, that number means whatever about me. And you're doing it live with these kids."
Rene's unwavering passion and dedication to empowering his students is truly inspiring. Through his story, he reminds us of the profound impact a single teacher can have, not just on their students, but on the world around them. As Jody Lynn eloquently stated, "Thank you for what you're doing is because you're making a difference."
