Do African Work
Update: 2020-09-04
Description
We’ve all heard the tropes: African time, showing up to work unprepared, and a general lack of professionalism. In today’s episode I ask, “Do Africans Work”? Are these stereotypes true, or are we unfairly judging ourselves?
My guests today are two women who have recruited, trained, managed, and sometimes fired, many employees across francophone and anglophone Africa. Edleen Elba is the founder and managing director of Job Search, a human resources firm in Freetown, Sierra Leone, and Ifeoma “Iffy” Ezeh is an Executive Officer for the USAID Mission in Guinea. We unpack these tropes and discuss how we can be more productive as a continent – especially as many of us have turned to remote working in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
