Description

Duke Universitys Class of 2029 demographic data, released with updated federal standards, shows a significant shift in racial and ethnic percentages. The new methodology, which allows students to identify as multiracial, resulted in a nearly two-month delay. The class composition now stands at 7% Black or African American, 11% Hispanic or Latino, 25% Asian, Asian-American, or Pacific Islander, and 33% white. Less than 1% identify as Native American, American Indian, Native Alaskan, or Native Hawaiian. Eleven percent chose not to report their race and ethnicity. The percentages for most racial and ethnic categories have decreased compared to last year, with white students dropping from 52% to 33% and Black or African American students decreasing from 13% to 7%. The university also saw an increase in its first-year class size and a higher number of applicants this year.
