In this episode of The Toastmasters Experience, I welcome Dale Rees-Bevan, a seasoned Toastmaster and professional speaker, to discuss her journey with Toastmasters.
Dale first encountered public speaking through a youth leadership program, which ignited her passion for it. She later joined Toastmasters clubs in South Africa, London, and Australia and now belongs to three clubs across multiple regions.
Dale shares that while she has always enjoyed public speaking, she has struggled with nerves, comparing the adrenaline rush of speaking to a roller coaster ride. Her advice for overcoming nerves is to deeply know your material and take pride in creating content that delivers value to the audience.
Dale explains her pursuit of the prestigious Accredited Speaker designation, a recognition for professional speakers who exemplify the Toastmasters brand. After applying twice, she successfully earned the designation in 2023. She emphasizes that it’s a way of honoring her journey with Toastmasters, which she credits for shaping her career as a speaker.
Dale also discusses her leadership roles in Toastmasters and how the organization has not only improved communication skills but also helped members become more compassionate individuals. She highlights her involvement in initiatives like "Chatter Camp," which helped young people develop confidence and communication skills, with one participant even securing early university admission due to her leadership experience.
Throughout the episode, Dale’s deep appreciation for Toastmasters is evident, and she encourages listeners to join the organization, emphasizing its benefits in both public speaking and active listening skills.
