Amtraks East River Tunnel Overhaul: Progress and ChallengesAmtraks East River Tunnel, opened in 1910, is undergoing a major overhaul of its two water-damaged tubes (1 and 2) due to Hurricane Sandys impact in 2012. Tube 2 is set to reopen in July 2026, followed by Tube 1 in the fall of 2026. Despite operating at 75% capacity, the project shows progress with old concrete demolished, original benchwalls removed, and new concrete and conduits installed. Long Island Rail Road President Rob Free acknowledges the good progress and efforts to mitigate disruptions, maintaining a 96.3% on-time performance.
