Ep 278: Understanding Grief and Loss with Ali Mills
Description
Grief and loss - we all experience it, but sometimes you might not recognise that’s what’s going on. Grief and loss show up in life over and over again - not just with the death of a loved one, but with any kind of change that impacts our lives.
Join me for this this episode of SelfKind with Erica Webb (that’s me!) as I chat with grief, loss, and bereavement counsellor Ali Mills.
You will hear:
🌿 Insights into expanding our understanding of grief beyond death, with an emphasis on the ways grieving can stem from various life challenges including relationship changes, loss of dreams, and other significant events.
🫸 Societal reluctance to address grief openly and the impact this has on us.
😥 The importance of acknowledging different types of grief, and how getting comfortable with discomfort can lead to better support systems for those who are grieving.
🩷 The connection between love and grief.
💡 Why Ali is inspired to impact change in cultural narratives to facilitate healthier processing of grief.
About Ali Mills:
Ali is a Registered Counsellor and Accredited Supervisor specialising in supporting clients of all ages with grief, loss, and bereavement through her private practice; Grief Guide. Ali has over a decade of experience working in oncology, palliative care, perinatal support, family separation, with children and young people, and with those impacted by sudden and traumatic losses.
Ali provides a specialised grief and loss lens to life’s challenges, whether they are death-related such as palliative care, pet loss, pregnancy loss or sudden and traumatic death, or non-death-related losses such as the end of a relationship, chronic health challenges or perinatal loss (to name a few.) Ali believes that we, as a culture, don’t do grief well and she is on a mission to change this narrative for those within our community who are grieving and for professionals supporting clients with these experiences.
Ali has a particular passion for supporting our youngest grievers (5+) but hopes to create a space for clients of all ages to feel seen, heard, and valued in their experiences.
