Episode 338: Great Compositions from The Standards Real Book, Part 1
Description
Focusing more on the song than the artist---tunes in The Standards Real Book. I've taken some of the songs I've tried to play on the piano....and listened to some different versions of them. I'm playing for you some of the best versions of some of my favourites. The tunes for this week are:
-The Summer Knows (written by Michel Legrand): a guitar version by George Benson
-Agua De Beber (Jobim), as performed by Vancouver's Jennifer Scott, with Cory Weeds on saxophone
- A wild version of Indian Summer, featuring the jazz french horn of Tom Varner
- Two different versions of Neal Hefti's "Cute". And you'll hear a great segue from Sullivan Fortner's solo piano version to the original by Count Basie.
- Blackberry Winter, and a beautiful version by Kate Baker and the late guitarist, Vic Juris.
- Cole Porter's So In Love. K.D. Lang does a great interpretation!
- Forest Flower:Sunrise, and the original Charles Lloyd recording from the Forest Flower album.
- I'm All Smiles: a rather weird tune from The Yearling. Lots of people have performed it, including Dave Young & Renee Rosnes.
- Deep Purple by, believe it or not, Art Tatum.
