From Sibelius to Selma Savolainen. Finnish Jazz Part 1

I play music from the early days of Jazz in Finland up until today. And quote from Jukka Perko about what makes jazz Finnish.

Because a lot of Finnish names are long and their pronunciation is often quite different from what we English speakers might expect, I've no doubt butchered some of the names in trying to pronounce them (even though I truly did some research in trying to pronounce some of them). So to compensate, I'll write down the spelling (at least the English spelling) of most of the names of the musicians who play on this podcast. I'l also spell the names of the tunes.

Here goes: from the first selection to the last:

1. Excerpt from Finlandia, written by Jean Sibelius.




2. Lapin äidin kehtolaulu ((translation: Lullaby From a Lapland Mother) by Santu Manterre. Written by a composer named Hamalainen. The musicians are all Canadian---and I think I pronounced them correctly.




3. Vetoketju, by Georg Malmstem and the Dallapé Orchestra.




4. Transient, by Jussi Reijonen. From an album called Tolme Toista (Three Seconds).




5. Like Father Like Son, by Jukka Perko. With Jarmo Saari and Teemu Viinikainen.




6. Severi Pyysalo, with drummer Jussi Lehtonen and bassist Timo Hirvonen. (playing their verson of If I Should Lose You)




7. Linda Fredriksson. Tune is Juniper. With Tuomor Prattala-fender rhodes and synthesizer, Olavi Louivuori-drums, Mikael Saastamoinen-double bass and effects, Minna Koivist-moog and modular synthesizer.




8. Haunted by Selma savolainen. From debut album called Horror Vacui. Musicians include Tomi Nikku, Max Zenger, Toomas Kesi-Santti, Eero Tikkanen, and Okko Saastamoinen.




9. Jens Thomas with Verneri Pohjola. Performing a tune bye AC/DC.




10. Party in THe Attic by Verneri Pohjola, My apologies for not crediting the other musicians. They are Jasper Høiby-bass, Kit Downes-piano, and Olavi Louhivuori-drums.




11. Innoccent Questions by Pekka Pohjola. Musicians are (again I neglected to mention them on the podcast) are: - Markku Kanerva / guitar
