Episode 72: Lock the Door & Head for the Train
Description
The Love Sweetie Podcast is a unique historical project that features real letters from Kathryn Frances Demaree Graham a.k.a. "Sweetie" that were written during her lifetime. These authentic letters are narrated and commented on by the hosts of the show (who give context on what is being discussed).
This episode features three letters from late November 1949 and early December 1949. The first letter is the biggest, and Sweetie describes her home life on County Line Rd in Hatboro, Pennsylvania, as her family prepares for the upcoming Christmas season. Her son, Lewis, is at this point four years old, and so she takes him to meet Santa Claus for the first time at Gimbels Department Store in Philadelphia. Meanwhile, she updates her family on various other things, and notes that she expects this Christmas season to be a smaller one. She notes that she is lonesome for her family to her sister Jeanne, but in the last letter of this episode in early December, she learns of a medical emergency having to do with her mother Laura back home, and asks her sister if she should leave Pennsylvania and return to Iowa to help her family.
