Confession

The confession is said privately. The audio file begins after confession.

Most merciful God,

we confess that we have sinned against you

in thought, word, and deed,

by what we have done,

and by what we have left undone.

We have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

have mercy on us and forgive us;

that we may delight in your will,

and walk in your ways,

to the glory of your Name. Amen.

A brief silence is kept

Grant your faithful people, merciful Lord, pardon and peace; that we may be cleansed from all our sins, and serve you with a quiet mind; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O gladsome light of the holy glory

of the everliving Father in heaven,

O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!

Now as we come to the setting of the sun,

and our eyes behold the vesper light,

we sing your praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

You are worthy at all times to be praised by joyful voices,

O Son of God, Giver of Life,

and to be glorified through all the worlds.

Psalter

The appointed Psalm is read together

Psalm 116

1  I love the LORD, for he hears my voice; *

he heard my pleas for mercy.

2  Because he inclined his ear toward me, *

I will call on him as long as I live.

3  The sorrows of death surrounded me;

the terrors of Sheol took hold of me; *

I was overcome by distress and sorrow.

4  Then I called on the name of the LORD: *

“O LORD, deliver my soul.”

5  Gracious is the LORD, and righteous; *

our God is full of compassion.

6  The LORD preserves the simple; *

I was brought low, and he saved me.

7  Return to your rest, O my soul; *

for the LORD has dealt bountifully with you.

8  For you have delivered my soul from death, *

my eyes from tears,

my feet from falling;

9  I will walk in the presence of the LORD *

in the land of the living.

10  I believed, even when I said, “I am greatly afflicted”; *

I said in my distress, “All men are liars.”

12  How shall I repay the LORD *

for all his goodness toward me?

13  I will lift up the cup of salvation *

and call upon the name of the LORD.

14  I will fulfill my vows to the LORD *

in the presence of all his people.

15  Precious in the sight of the LORD *

is the death of his saints.

16  O LORD, truly I am your servant; *

I am your servant, the son of your maidservant.

You have loosed my bonds.

17  I will offer to you the sacrifice of thanksgiving *

and call upon the name of the LORD.

18  I will fulfill my vows to the LORD *

in the presence of all his people,

19  in the courts of the house of the LORD, *

in the midst of you, O Jerusalem.

Praise the LORD. †

The Lessons

A reading of the appointed lessons

2 Kings 8

Now Elisha had said to the woman whose son he had restored to life, “Arise, and depart with your household, and sojourn wherever you can, for the LORD has called for a famine, and it will come upon the land for seven years.” So the woman arose and did according to the word of the man of God. She went with her household and sojourned in the land of the Philistines seven years. And at the end of the seven years, when the woman returned from the land of the Philistines, she went to appeal to the king for her house and her land. Now the king was talking with Gehazi the servant of the man of God, saying, “Tell me all the great things that Elisha has done.” And while he was telling the king how Elisha had restored the dead to life, behold, the woman whose son he had restored to life appealed to the king for her house and her land. And Gehazi said, “My lord, O king, here is the woman, and here is her son whom Elisha restored to life.” <b
