Confession

The confession is said privately. The audio file begins after confession.

Most merciful God,

we confess that we have sinned against you

in thought, word, and deed,

by what we have done,

and by what we have left undone.

We have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

have mercy on us and forgive us;

that we may delight in your will,

and walk in your ways,

to the glory of your Name. Amen.

A brief silence is kept

Grant your faithful people, merciful Lord, pardon and peace; that we may be cleansed from all our sins, and serve you with a quiet mind; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Phos Hilaron

O gladsome light of the holy glory

of the everliving Father in heaven,

O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!

Now as we come to the setting of the sun,

and our eyes behold the vesper light,

we sing your praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

You are worthy at all times to be praised by joyful voices,

O Son of God, Giver of Life,

and to be glorified through all the worlds.

Psalter

The appointed Psalm is read together

Psalm 90

1  Lord, you have been our dwelling place *

in every generation.

2  Before the mountains were brought forth,

before you had formed the earth and the world, *

from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

3  You turn man back into dust *

saying, “Return, O children of man.”

4  For a thousand years in your sight *

are like the day that has just gone by,

or like a watch in the night.

5  You sweep them away like a flood; *

they are as a dream,

like new grass growing in the morning:

6  in the morning it flourishes and is renewed; *

by the evening it fades and withers away.

7  For we are consumed by your anger; *

by your wrath we are dismayed.

8  You have set our iniquities before you, *

our secret sins in the light of your presence.

9  For all our days pass away in your fury; *

we bring our years to an end like a sigh.

10  The span of our days is seventy years, *

eighty perhaps for those who are strong;

10  yet their sum is but toil and sorrow; *

they are soon gone, and we fly away.

11  Who understands the power of your anger, *

and your wrath as great as the fear that is due you?

12  So teach us to number our days *

that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

13  Return, O Lord. How long will it be? *

Have compassion on your servants.

14  Satisfy us in the morning with your faithful love, *

that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.

15  Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, *

for as many years as we have seen evil.

16  Let your work be shown to your servants, *

and your glory to their children.

17  Let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us,

establish the work of our hands for us; *

yes, establish the work of our hands. †

The Lessons

A reading of the appointed lessons

2 Kings 1

After the death of Ahab, Moab rebelled against Israel.

Now Ahaziah fell through the lattice in his upper chamber in Samaria, and lay sick; so he sent messengers, telling them, “Go, inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, whether I shall recover from this sickness.” But the angel of the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite, “Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say to them, ‘Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron? Now therefore thus says the LORD, You shall not come down from the bed to which you have gone up, but you shall surely die.’” So Elijah went.

The messengers returned to the king, and he
