FREEZE FRAME: “Hurry Up Tomorrow” (R), “Murderbot” (TV-MA), “Octopus!” (Not rated)
Update: 2025-05-16
Description
Abel Tesfaye, better known as The Weeknd, stars along with Jenna Ortega in the artsy and very dark musical drama, "Hurry Up Tomorrow." Tesfaye wrote the script along with Reza Fahim and director Trey Edward Shults. Tesfaye plays a fictionalized version of his pop star self as he faces mental problems, vocal issues and, most disturbingly, an unstable fan. There are some intriguing elements in this psychological thriller, and the actors are fine, but the meandering, enigmatic approach will probably make "Hurry Up Tomorrow" a frustrating puzzle for everyone but The Weeknd’s most ardent fans.
The brash and offbeat Apple TV+ sci-fi comedy series "Murderbot" comes from the Weitz Brothers, best known for "American Pie." Alexander Skarsgård plays a partly biological security cyborg who spends most of his time watching bad sci-f TV series. He’s managed to deactivate his built-in directive to do no harm to humans and is dismayed by the pettiness and weakness of the people he's assigned to protect. Will he go rogue and do them all in? This smart and often funny series seems a bit padded for 10 episodes but has a great cast that includes KC native David Dastmalchian. It is tailor made for genre fans and general audiences should have a bit of fun with “Murderbot,” too.
The cheeky narration by Phoebe Waller-Bridge is the best thing about the harmless Amazon Prime documentary, "Octopus!" Combining underwater photography with stop-motion animation, "Octopus!" is a lighthearted look at the brief but intriguing life of a colorful mollusc and the people who are obsessed with this unique species.
