Description
WakeMed campus police officer Roger Smith, who was fatally shot last month, had a history of disciplinary actions during his time at the Knightdale Police Department. Despite being named the top Crisis Intervention Team officer in 2012, Smith was fired in 2013 due to multiple policy violations, previous warnings, suspensions, and demotions. The official narrative of Smith as a hero is being challenged by friends and loved ones of Benji Martin Junior, who was shot during the incident and argues that Martin did not pose a threat. WakeMed, being a private entity, has declined to comment on Smiths previous employment history and has not released body camera or surveillance footage from the incident.
