Members Reviews:
Great collection of classic sci-fi pioneers.
Some of the stories are harder to compete (the secret agent especially). Overall - very nice!
Volunteer Recordings (Librivox) Are Free Elsewhere
It is rather sad to see this sort of product here.
This is a cut and paste compendium of passable recordings that were originally recorded and given by well-meaning volunteers to a long established non-profit organisation called Librivox, that provides public domain works for free.
I have just checked the Librivox catalogue and all these books can be downloaded as mp3s or streamed for free. These are not professional recordings as such, but the readers here are pretty good. It seems the publisher, Knight Writer, has made this selection from the Librivox catalogue with some discrimination: however, this appears to be the sum of the publisher's contribution to this audiobook.
Whether the narrators' permission has been sought to publish these works on audible, I do not know, but somehow I doubt it (see the next paragraph). I am fully aware that Librivox volunteers give up any rights to these recordings, and that they are, undoubtedly, in the public domain. There are numerous vendors touting CDs of Librivox recordings on eBay.
At first sight it appears strange that the 'publisher' has misspelled the names of the readers and narrators. So Knight Rider (publisher) appears to credit the narrators but has deliberately spelled all their names incorrectly. Kristin Hughes becomes Christine Hughes, Mark Nelson is described as Mark Neilson, Rebecca Dittman is spelled Ditmen, Cori Samuel is now Korey Samuel and Bob Neufeld is morphed into Bob Knufeld. It's a half hearted attempt to disguise the identities of this audiobook's true creators.
Having read this, you may wish to put money into the pocket of this publisher. I have purchased it in order to write this review. I don't think it's ethical, personally, to sell and profit by the freely available work of good-hearted volunteers, however legal it may actually be.
