The dialogue is sharp in this clever tale of professional and marital intrigue.
In the high concept action comedy "Novocaine," a bank executive who has a rare condition where he can feel no pain tries to rescue a female employee taken hostage by ruthless bank robbers. It could be called the battle of the nepo babies. Jack Quaid, son of Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan battles a bad guy played by Jack Nicholson's son Ray. The cast and action set pieces work well, but the gimmick only goes so far. "Novocaine" is a painless distraction.
“Rule Breakers” is one of those faith-based films from Angel Studios that succeeds mainly on good intentions. It purports to tell the true story of a group of Afghani teenage girls who, despite the odds against them in a country that frowns on educating women, compete successfully in international robotics competitions. The filmmaking is bland and uninspired, but the story’s general good vibes carry the day.
"The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie" features Daffy Duck and Porky Pig in an animated farce about the duo's attempt to save earth from an alien invasion. It's too creepy for little kids and lacks the zany Looney Tunes wit. It’s noisy, frenetic and plays like it was written by a 7-year-old who drank way too many Mountain Dews.
