Today I have the immense pleasure of interviewing my friend Gerald Asante and his co-founder Jimmy Law. Gerald and Jimmy have created GameOn Active, a new app for finding and hosting pick up sports games.
The story of GameOn began like so many of the sports games it hosts, on the court. Jimmy and Gerald met on a basketball court in London of all places. Jimmy conceptualized the idea of using technology to facilitate avid sports fans need to find fellow enthusiasts to play with. After meeting Gerald and seeing his passion not only for sports but for his idea, they teamed up to make this vision a reality.
A company like GameOn has of course, weathered some challenges due to COVID, but Jimmy and Gerald are far too resilient to let something like a pandemic stand in between them and their dream of bringing athletes together to play the sports they’re passionate about. They’ve had plenty of obstacles, like doubters, the difficulty of fundraising, and others you can hear about in the interview. These have only strengthened their resolve and forced them to innovate, which they’ve succeeded at tremendously.
What Does the Future Hold for the World of Pick Up Sports?
Plenty, in my humble opinion. All of it good. GameOn reminds me a little bit about Seek, my interview subjects from a few weeks ago. I say that because as ventures in the realm of fun, their demand is naturally tempered by COVID. At the same time, I think the expectation is all of that pent up demand is set to be unleashed once the pandemic abates. Anyone interested in watching a startup take off when things return to normal should stay tuned for what GameOn is set to do for and to the world of sports.
So, with all of that said, I hope you enjoy the interview. I realize my last one had some audio quality issues, which don’t appear here. I’m also considering some professional equipment, which should make things crisper on my end.
