Description

In December 2020, Ghislaine Maxwell offered an extraordinary $28.5 million bail package in an attempt to secure her release while awaiting trial for her role in Jeffrey Epstein’s sex trafficking network. The proposal included a $22.5 million bond secured by assets belonging to her and her husband, as well as millions more pledged by close friends and family. Her lawyers emphasized that she was willing to submit to the strictest possible conditions — including 24-hour armed guard surveillance, GPS monitoring, and total home confinement — arguing that Maxwell was not a flight risk but a scapegoat of public outrage. The defense even highlighted that she would voluntarily waive extradition rights to the UK or France to prove her intent to remain in the United States and face trial.

The court, however, wasn’t convinced. Federal Judge Alison Nathan rejected the bail request, citing Maxwell’s history of secrecy, multiple foreign passports, hidden assets, and the substantial resources available to her should she attempt to flee. The judge ruled that no combination of conditions could ensure her appearance at trial. Prosecutors also pointed out that Maxwell had gone to great lengths to hide her location before her arrest — paying cash for property and registering it under an alias — which undercut her argument that she could be trusted to remain under supervision. Despite the unprecedented size of her bail offer, the court concluded that her ties, wealth, and international connections made her a severe flight risk, keeping her behind bars until her conviction in 2021.
