I dig me some cover songs! Especially when i already loved the original. Better than that though is when the song takes on a whole new feeling or meaning. I’m not talking about remixes, I’m talking about a totally different artist putting their interpretation on wax of another’s artist song. The number one practitioners of this has to be jazz musicians.
Jazz cats would normally make covers of song for three main reasons: Out of respect for another artist or Because their own compositions may not sell enough albums on their own. I’m guessing a majority of the time, the record company decides the latter. It’s shitty, but we benefit cuz often times we get a song that is strong if not stronger than the original. Granted, there are plenty of songs out there that sound the same as the original, just with a sax taking the place of the vocalist, going note for note. Now that shit is boring. It feels lazy too, but I can’t play a lick on anything so I know some difficulty is involved.
Today, I give you two some recently discovered covers I’ve recently dug up that are jazz cover of R&B and Pop songs. Hopefully I’ll continue to bring varied genera of music playing covers.
Off topic, why the hell is Digable Planets first album so damn much? I’ve seen it as high as 189 pounds! That’s like $290. $290!!! 290, Ladybug better be on my patio while I’m grilling burgers.
