Description

On the morning of 8 December 2022, the Jersey fishing boat L’Ecume II set out to sea with three men on board. Just after 5.30am, it collided with the freight ship Commodore Goodwill off the island’s west coast.

The impact was catastrophic.

Skipper Michael Michieli and his two crewmen, Larry Simyunn and Jervis Baligat all lost their lives.

What followed was one of the most complex investigations Jersey has ever seen. Teams had to recover and examine evidence from the seabed, analyse data from the ship’s black box, and reconstruct the final moments before the collision.

In this episode of Inside the Investigation, we speak to the lead officers who oversaw that work. From specialist radar analysis to underwater recovery operations, they take us step by step through how the inquiry unfolded – and the scale of expertise required to piece together what happened that morning...
