International Storytelling, Succession's Psychology, and Media's Cultural Influence with story developer Kellye Carnahan Part 1
Description
In our latest episode, we had the pleasure of speaking with Kellye, a development producer for Film and TV who has worked in both the US and London film industries. Kellye shares her insights into the power of international storytelling and how streaming platforms have made it easier for global audiences to access and enjoy films and series from around the world. We discuss the advancements in subtitling and dubbing technology, as well as the importance of watching content in its original language, to truly appreciate the emotions and intentions behind the writer's words.
We also explored the psychological themes of money and generational trauma present in the popular show 'Succession.' Listen in as we discuss how the characters manage to be both unlikable and relatable, as well as the idea of identifying with on-screen characters and questioning our own actions in similar situations. We touch on the concept that having too much money can, in fact, be a curse.
Lastly, we delve into the relationship between media, entertainment, and culture, discussing the influence of the Kardashians and the effects of reality television on discourse and respect.

About Kellye:
Kellye is a London-based development executive with experience across film and television. She began her career in Los Angeles, working at a literary agency before going to work as an assistant on the set of WE BOUGHT A ZOO. Subsequently, Kellye worked as an assistant to producer Zanne Devine. When Devine joined Miramax, she brought Kellye along, promoting her to development coordinator at the studio. Kellye spent 6 years at Miramax, promoted to creative executive along the way. While there she supported the development and production of projects including THE 9TH LIFE OF LOUIS DRAX, BAD SANTA 2 and I, TONYA, and worked with writers and directors such as David Wolstencroft, Ol Parker, and Shauna Cross. In 2018, Kellye decided to follow her passion for international stories and talent and moved to the UK where she worked as a freelancer in the development space for companies including The Bureau and Mammoth Screen. Additionally, she supported the writer’s room of 10 PERCENT, the UK remake of the French series CALL MY AGENT for Headline Pictures. In 2021, Kellye joined the international team at Netflix, focusing on development across films in the UK, France, the Nordics and Germany. Projects at Netflix include Babak Anvari’s I CAME BY, BAFTA nominated film THE WONDER, and SCOOP, the upcoming Gillian Anderson film about the Prince Andrew Newsnight interview. In 2023 Kellye returned to the freelance world, currently working as a film and television consultant for various producers and production companies, including Brock Media, the company behind the upcoming Saorsie Ronan starrer THE OUTRUN. Kellye’s passion lies in developing original and authentic voices and stories, digging into universal themes and emotions that can resonate around the world without losing the specificity from where they originated. That specificity is what makes a film or series sparkle and, coupled with the core of human emotion, is how we can fulfil an audience's need to be engaged, enamoured, entertained and - even if only in the smallest way - enlightened.
