José António Uva, Developer of São Lourenço do Barrocal: a better hotel
Description
The farm of São Lourenço do Barrocal had been in José’s family for nearly 200 years before it was nationalized in 1975. His family got the farm back in 1994 when Portugal entered the EU, but never did anything with it. Until one day of January 2002, when after seven years of working in London, something drew José back to this place. He spent two years investigating a potential hospitality project, and another 14 years turning it into reality. With no background in hospitality or architecture, he had no filter and built a concept from scratch based on the local environment and the original structure of the farm. In this episode, we talk about his long term vision for São Lourenço do Barrocal and how he developed such a complex hospitality project. José shares his thoughts on sustainability formulas, and how he placed timelessness and future generations at the core of his project.
