Description

Residents of Kalk Bay’s fishing community are standing up against soaring water tariffs and ongoing gentrification that threatens to push generations-old families out of their homes. Speaking to Lester Kiewit, Traci Kwaai, a sixth-generation Kalk Bay fisher and community activist, shared the history of her community’s struggle, surviving colonialism, apartheid, forced removals and decades of displacement, and explained why this Saturday’s protest is so important. A solidarity protest under the banner “No to Gentrification and Hiked Tariffs for the Kalk Bay Fishing Community – Our Roots Are Deeper Than Their Pockets!” will take place on Saturday, 4 October 2025, at 4pm in the Kalk Bay fishing community on Gordon Road. Community members and supporters are encouraged to bring their placards and picnic baskets as they stand together against the pressures of gentrification and rising costs threatening the heritage and livelihoods of local fishers. Traci highlighted how unfair municipal charges are placing unnecessary financial pressure on households already struggling to cover basic living costs and called on the city to lower tariffs to affordable rates.
