Lean hog futures surged on Thursday, with contracts rising by $0.85 to $1.85. The national base hog price also climbed, reaching $71.69, a $1.64 increase from the previous day. The CME Lean Hog Index showed a slight gain of $0.27. The USDAs Export Sales report revealed significant pork sales for the coming years, with 23,600 metric tons for 2025 and 3,947 metric tons for 2026. Export shipments hit 32,132 metric tons, the highest volume since June. Despite a slight decrease in September exports, the market remains robust, with a half a percent increase from August. The USDAs pork carcass cutout value also rose, reaching $98.84 per hundredweight, driven by increases in butt and belly cuts. Federally inspected hog slaughter for Thursday was 494,000 head, bringing the weeks total to 1.965 million head, a significant increase from last year.
