Living Life Naturally: LLN Episode #274: Dr. Michaela Robbins – How to Find the Best Way to Address Anti-Aging in Menopause
Description
About Dr. Michaela Robbins:
Dr. Michaela Robbins is a Doctor of Nursing Practice, Board-Certified Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner, and founder of East x West Med. She has over a decade of experience in medicine with a background in hormone health, longevity health, functional and lifestyle medicine.
Dr. Robbins received her master’s and doctoral training at Columbia University and has completed additional training through the Hormone Health Institute, the Institute of Functional Medicine and the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. Prior to founding East x West Med, she led functional wellness direct patient care as well as the longevity coaching program at Modern Age, Upper East Side, NYC. After turning down an offer at one of the largest hormone health companies, Dr. Robbins aimed to start a company that fused boutique longevity medicine with approachable and compassionate care.
At East x West Med, Dr. Robbins sees patients in New York, New Jersey, and Florida focused on health optimization and hormone balance. She also has advised many healthtech startups in the wellness space and is currently the primary in-house medical consultant for Truemed Payments. She is published in several accredited research journals and has authored and co-authored several textbook chapters focused on diagnosis and management of chronic disease and Doctor of Nursing practices.
Dr. Robbins pulls from different areas of medicine to offer people an individualized approach and help people become wellness-focused instead of disease-focused.
What We Discuss In This Episode:
Dr. Robbins discusses the common misconception that "anti-aging" is achievable, when, in reality, aging is a natural process that cannot be fully reversed. She emphasizes the importance of managing expectations and focusing on feeling your best at each stage, rather than trying to turn back the clock. Embracing the aging process is key.
Dr. Robbins explains that addressing aging and menopause requires a multi-factorial approach, not a single "magic" solution. Key elements include lifestyle (diet, exercise, stress management), hormone balance (not just estrogen, but also testosterone), and targeted therapies/supplements. She stressed the need for a personalized plan based on each individual's needs and goals.
Many women experience symptoms of low testosterone as they age, but this is often overlooked or misunderstood. Dr. Robbins discussed how to assess testosterone levels and the various treatment options, including lifestyle changes, supplements, and bioidentical testosterone therapy. She emphasized the importance of working with a provider who specializes in women's hormones.
Dr. Robbins' top recommendations for women navigating menopause and aging are:
1. Don't just accept the symptoms - seek out professional help to address the underlying issues, and
2. Build a support network of other women going through similar experiences. Having that community and accountability can make a big difference.
