Mahuta shows mana in kōrero with China

Foreign Affairs Minister Nanaia Mahuta showed mana, by holding the line on issues of importance to Aotearoa New Zealand during a robust meeting she had in March with her Chinese counterpart Qin Gang.
Australian newspapers says the hui was an hour long haranguing by China, but Minister Mahuta says there was certainly robust kōrero from both sides.
“It was a robust conversation there is no doubt about that.
“We discussed fully the range of issues that New Zealand wanted to put onto the table and similarly China put forward their issues in a robust way.
“We discussed Russia in Ukraine. We discussed South China Seas, Taiwan Strait certainly a number of issues I have consistently expressed .” says Minister Mahuta
The Minister’s trip to Beijing was the first in-person meeting between senior New Zealand and Chinese officials. There were concerns relations between the two nations were strained following former Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s comments that a Chinese military base in the Pacific would “fundamentally alter the strategic balance of the region”.
