Description

Members of Parliament from the Minority caucus have staged a walkout from parliamentary proceedings in a show of solidarity with the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Chairman Wontumi was arrested on Tuesday, 27th May, 2025 by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on charges of causing financial loss to the state. Although he has been granted bail to the tune of GH¢50 million, he remains in EOCO custody as he has yet to meet the bail conditions.

The Minority MPs say their boycott is a protest against what they describe as political persecution and a demand for fair and transparent legal processes.

Parliamentary business was briefly disrupted by the walkout, though proceedings resumed with members from the Majority side continuing with the day’s agenda.

Addressing the media in a briefing, Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin criticized the bail terms, describing them as “onerous” and suggesting they were deliberately punitive.

“EOCO is using onerous bail conditions to punish Chairman Wontumi,” Mr. Afenyo-Markin stated, questioning the fairness and intent behind the terms imposed.

Meanwhile, EOCO has not issued further comments on the status of Wontumi’s case, and the exact details surrounding the alleged financial loss remain under investigation.
