Norway’s recognition of Palestine as a state was initially celebrated by many Palestinians living in the country. However, the decision has brought unexpected challenges for the community, who are no longer considered stateless under Norwegian law. Previously, stateless individuals could apply for Norwegian citizenship after three years of residency. Now, many Palestinians fear the process could extend to eight years, prolonging the uncertainty they already face. For others, the change could mean returning to live under Israeli occupation to obtain necessary documents, a prospect they had long avoided. Palestinian Families who arrived in Norway for professional work and those who fled Gaza with their children express concerns over the impact on their lives. While Norway’s labour minister clarified that case-by-case decisions would be made for children without Palestinian documents, many Palestinians feel caught in a bureaucratic limbo. The situation has sparked political debate in Norway, with opposition voices accusing the government of undermining the protections afforded to stateless people and questioning the assumptions behind the policy change.
