First published in 1915, Of Human Bondage is widely considered to be Somerset Maughams masterpiece and is believed to have been at least partially based on Maughams own life. This is the tale of Philip Carey, who is orphaned at a young age and raised by his uncle.
Of Human Bondage follows Philip on his travels to Paris, London, and Germany, taking the listener on an adventure of discovery as his travels brings him new discoveries and emotional growth. Philips life takes a turn for the worse when he meets Mildred Rogers and begins a destructive relationship that will have lasting consequences.
Orphaned at ten years old, W. Somerset Maugham was raised by his paternal uncle who provided little guidance and warmth during his childhood. Instead of going into law like other members of his family, he decided to become an author and was considered to be one of the most successful of his era.
Members Reviews:
Young man with club foot sets out in a variety of experiences seeking happiness.
A young man with a club foot., who had lost both parents, under the guidance of a relative, sets out seeking happiness and fulfillment. From childhood to maturity, he goes through a number of experiences, some good and some bad, until he finds what he really wants. The various experiences vary from foolish and self-defeating, to realistic and mature. It is difficult to imagine anyone going through the things he tries when seeking his life's work, from an artist in Paris to finally becoming a doctor in England, but for demonstrating his maturing process and his final goal for happiness, Maugham goes somewhat to extreme. However, it is good reading and a classic.
A very good novel, albiet quite long
A very good novel, albiet quite long. Story of a man's life from birth to middle age.
Worth the time and effort to read.
