Great read, I keep going back to this book!

More info about the Hobbit world.
Easy read.

Weak arguments, poor writing, uninteresting
I know a lot about The Hobbit, Tolkien, and how he wrote it. In almost every chapter, Bell makes claims about the book that are not true. He drastically overstates the connections between The Hobbit and the bible. He basically brings up some event in The Hobbit, then spews some bible quotes that mention the same noun. "Look, Middle-earth had eagles. So do these random bible verses!"
His writing is poor: flat, uninteresting, badly edited, and wandering. His nearly empty paragraphs are inflated with extraneous references (say, to later events in The Hobbit) to details that have no bearing whatsoever on the point he's trying to make. Did he have an editor? His language is imprecise and unpolished. When Bell's original prose is followed by a quote from Tolkien's work, the contrast is embarrassing.
The points that Bell DOES make, he makes inadequately. It's butter scraped over too much bread. A long focused essay on something that would actually have some legs--like Bilbo's pity and mercy for Gollum, for example--might be worthwhile. Scattershot bible quotes poorly connected to Bell's boring Hobbit plot summaries are not.
Don't be fooled by the people saying that this book is worthwhile. The resemblance between the book's cover art and the current movies' art direction should be enough to tell us all that this book is just a poor-value, opportunistic attempt to cash in on whatever popular interest the book currently has. Much more interesting commentary about Tolkien's work can be found by just googling it and reading message boards.
I'm glad I only checked this out from the library. It would be a very poor purchase indeed.

Great for a unique book study (Sunday School, maybe?)
Bell's book really serves as a good guide to the details one might miss. It's not really a devotional at all. Instead, it's kind of a "betcha didn't catch this" version of a book study. This would be an excellent book to use as a Wednesday night series at church or maybe even a Sunday School book study. The writing is somewhat academic so don't expect to read this all in one sitting. The enthusiasm that Bell has for Tolkien is not really contagious, but it is very evident in his writing.
