Organized Crime: The Chicago Outfit (9/16/24)
Update: 2024-09-16
Description
The Chicago Outfit, one of America’s most notorious organized crime syndicates, rose to power during Prohibition under the leadership of Al Capone, dominating the illegal alcohol trade with ruthless violence, most infamously in the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. After Capone’s imprisonment, the Outfit expanded under leaders like Frank Nitti and Tony Accardo, who diversified into labor racketeering, gambling, and union control, quietly building a vast criminal empire. With figures like Sam Giancana and Anthony Spilotro, the Outfit’s influence spread nationally, even reaching Las Vegas and reportedly involving the CIA. However, federal pressure and internal conflicts, including the infamous Family Secrets trial of 2007, weakened the Outfit, though it still operates discreetly today. Though its power has waned, the Outfit remains an enduring symbol of organized crime’s adaptability and resilience in American history.
