Description

Tommy Agro, a feared enforcer for the Gambino crime family, rose through the ranks in New York’s violent underworld in the 1950s and 60s, earning a brutal reputation for his work in loansharking and extortion. Known for his relentless violence, Agro’s most infamous act came in 1979 when he savagely beat his associate Joe Iannuzzi over an unpaid debt. This attack backfired when Iannuzzi turned informant for the FBI, leading to Agro’s arrest in 1986. With damning evidence from wiretaps and Iannuzzi’s testimony, Agro was convicted of extortion and racketeering. He died in prison in 1987, marking the end of his reign as one of the Gambino family’s most notorious enforcers, and his fall symbolized the weakening of the Mafia’s grip on New York.
