Overcoming the Unthinkable: Michelle’s Journey - Pseudomyxoma Peritonei and the Carnivore Diet S2E62
Description
In 2007, it was discovered that Michelle Sanders had a very rare form of abdominal cancer, pseudomyxoma peritonei. Pseudomyxoma peritonei is caused by cancerous cells that produce abundant mucus and tumors. The tumors cause adhesions (unnatural fibrous connection of tissues), and impede digestion and organ function. If left untreated, the tumors and mucus will fill the abdominal cavity.
In a procedure referred to as “The mother of all surgeries”, Michelle had most of her internal organs removed (spleen, appendix, omentum, bowel segments, etc.). Her liver and diaphragm were scraped. Then a heated chemotherapy solution was circulated through her abdominal cavity for 90 minutes, a procedure called HIPEC, which left her with masses of internal scar tissue, and damage to her vagus nerve.
After surgery, Michelle was only instructed to eat low fibre. Without further nutritional guidance, she ate mostly cake and chocolate, and her weight ballooned.
6 years ago, she tried Keto and dropped 6 stone/84 lbs. Almost 2 years ago, Michelle transitioned to Carnivore.
There have been some improvements in her condition, but she still has digestive issues. Michelle suffers from chronic overall pain, nerve pain and has CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome)
She does the Carnivore diet because she can't tolerate consuming any plants since her surgery. Michelle’s story is an unusual and remarkable one.
