Pythagoras founded the Esoteric school in what is now Crotone(Calabria), to develop his idea of Democracy. Creating a generation of Young men ready to Server humanity. Where the main of these Teenagers were not from Rich families but selected for their qualities! Being an esoteric teacher, meaning to be selective! Creating people to be the holders of the power of their nations: Democracy. The question will be? And the not chosen one? They will be educated? They will be people? The answer was no. Not everybody was considered people, so the idea of Democracy was very different of what we have in use Right now,  mainly in all occident. But since it was the Greeks who created the meaning of Demos(People) and Democracy(The Power of the people), I think that is time to call with a new word, specially with actual experience.
