A brand new BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisation of a classic Raymond Chandler mystery featuring private eye Philip Marlowe.
Marlowes on a case: his client, a dried-up husk of a woman, wants him to recover a rare gold coin called a Brasher Doubloon, missing from her late husbands collection. Thats the simple part. It becomes more complicated when Marlowe finds that everyone who handles the coin suffers a run of very bad luck: they always end up dead. Thats also unlucky for a private investigator, because leaving a trail of corpses around LA gets cops noses out of joint. If Marlowe doesnt wrap this one up fast, hes going to end up in jail - or worse, in a box in the ground....
Dramatised by: Toby Stephens, Judy Parfitt, Jessica Raine, Patrick Kennedy, Joe Montana, Stuart Milligan, Susie Riddell, Peter Polycarpou, Gerard McDermott, Carl Prekopp, Alex Tregear, James Lailey, Sean Baker, Alun Raglan, Simon Bubb.

Too Many Twists & Turns To Transfer Well To Radio
Any additional comments?
I love those 40's $ 50's radio plays and they actually did an amazing job of recreating that same atmosphere. The only drawback of this was that it seemed to be trying to pack too much material into a short 1.5 hours. The result ends up sounding very condensed, giving it the feeling of taking a twist turn every 5 or 10 minutes. As you can imagine, even for the most enthousiastic listener, this gets tiresome.
Toby Stevens is pitch perfect!
All of the BBC adaptations of Chandler ' s canon of Marlowe novels are riveting and well worth a listen. The cast us in fine voice, their American accents believable. I felt transported to 1940s Los Angeles!
Classic Noir
Would you listen to Raymond Chandler: The High Window (Dramatised) again? Why?
I definitely would listen to this again. It is a classic with great characters and a fantastic sense of style. If you like your crime sharp and classy this is the one.
What other book might you compare Raymond Chandler: The High Window (Dramatised) to, and why?
Set against other crime heroes like Rebus for instance the flawed central character is always more interesting than the one that is squeaky clean (in my opinion).
Which character as performed by the narrators was your favourite?
Marlow has to be brilliant as the thing rests on him. I really enjoyed this cast production.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Again, as a dramatisation it isn't too long to listen to all at once.
an exemplary adaptation
i absolutely loved this version of chandler's 'the high window'. toby stephens is suitably 'hard-boiled' in his diction and dialogue, but is also sensual and attractive in the role. whereas the late great ed bishop ruled in his bbc versions of the marlowe stories, finally there seems to be a worthy sucessor. the voice actors, the sound effects and the dialogue are very good indeed, and the sultry jazz score is so evocative. i loved 'playback', 'poodle springs' and now this......
