Description

For years doctors have prescribed Metformin - a cheap, 100-year-old drug - as standard therapy in Type 2 diabetes, to reduce insulin resistance and improve blood sugar. But no study had directly tested how Metformin affects insulin resistance in adults with Type 1 diabetes. Now, in a world-first clinical trial, researchers at the Garvan Institute in Sydney have shown, although Metformin does NOT counteract insulin resistance in Type 1 diabetes - it does reduce the amount of insulin people need, while maintaining similar blood glucose levels

Guest: Dr Jennifer Snaith, clinical researcher and endocrinologist at the Garvan Institute and St Vincent's clinical campus, Sydney

Producer: Anne Barker
