Description

While I continue to mostly write blogs, the rest of the world has moved on to producing video content and podcasts. In our modern, cramped and noisy world, setting up the right studio environment and ensuring high production values becomes a little challenging especially on a tight budget.

If there’s one thing that the audience notices first, it’s usually the audio quality. If the audio has a lot of hiss, sounds “thin” or has a lot of background noise, it can detract from the message being delivered. On the other hand, a nice, clean and “robust” sounding voice can lend authority, credibility and professionalism to the presenter. With many popular live-streaming and video-on-demand platforms nowadays, many people are likely to want to create content. It’s no wonder that the biggest content creators nowadays all seem to have a large studio mic in shot.

Not being a professional video content creator myself, FIFINE contacted me about reviewing their AmpliGame AM8 USB/XLR dynamic microphone. This is a reasonably-priced (~AU$100) ready-to-go microphone that was a RedDot Design winner for 2023, compatible with virtually every device thanks to its inbuilt USB connectivity but also having an XLR connection for an upgrade path to a full-blown studio mixer in the future. It has zero-latency headphone monitoring output and a touch-mute button. Available in black, white and pink, it also has RGB LED lighting for added style. As someone who could do with a bit of an audio upgrade, I agreed to test the unit and provide my thoughts.

Thanks to FIFINE for providing this unit for review under the Review Challenge Terms.

Unboxing

The unit was somewhat battered through its journey to Australia, arriving slightly crushed but not critically so. The box has a dark theme, with the image of the microphone offset in gloss on the front and its various other views featuring prominently on the rear.

Key features include the USB-C and XLR connectivity, the dynamic cardoid-pattern capsule for less background noise, included windscreen and stand, real-time 3.5mm headphone monitoring jack, touch-mute button, analog volume/gain knobs and RGB LED lighting.

The side also indicates the included items in the box. It is nice to see that this kit is “ready-to-go”, including a stand and a cable, rather than just the mic itself.

Opening the box, we are greeted by the user’s guide on top and the base packed in the top foam layer. In the bottom foam layer is the microphone attached to its support arm and a USB cable.

Here is all the included items taken out of the box.
